Best Doom Games, Ranked

The Doom franchise is one of the most well-known and beloved first-person shooters, and these are the best ones in the series by far.

To quickly follow the first game’s success, Doom 2 was developed by id Software in just 10 months and released for DOS PCs in October 1994. Many critics praised the sequel as better than the original. It’s actually the first in the series to be released in stores as the first Doom was initially published as shareware on the early internet. Over 30 years later, the game is still beloved.

Doom 64 is also part of the Doom Anthology SteelBook. The version that’s included is the well-received 2020 remastered version. It features improved visuals, 60 FPS gameplay, and additional “Lost Levels” that add more to the base game’s story. Chronologically following that in the anthology is 2004’s Doom 3. Doom 3 was essentially a reboot of the original Doom, but with a more survival horror feel.

Doom Slayer in Doom Eternal

The final two titles in the Doom Anthology SteelBook are the two modern incarnations of the series: 2016’s Doom and its 2019 sequel, Doom Eternal. Developed yet again by id Software but now published by Bethesda, the modern reboot was released on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One to mostly glowing reviews. Just as Doom 2 impressively followed up the original Doom, critics were very impressed with Doom Eternal as a sequel to the 2016 reboot.

A “Big, Uh, Freakin’ Gun”

Also part of the Doom Anthology SteelBook is an awesome replica of the Doom series’ BFG. The gun made a cameo in Quake II with the shooter’s manual stating BFG stands for “Big, Uh, Freakin’ Gun”. But you can probably read through the lines as to what id Software was really going for with the acronym.

The BFG replica is 5-inches in size. It has LED lights built in and includes a stand for display. It’s a really cool piece of gaming merch that enthusiasts of the Doom series will love.

If you want to hop on the Doom Anthology SteelBook deal, you’ll need to pull the trigger fast. The deal expires on March 9th or when the product sells out.

It’s an exciting time to be a Doom fan. The recently announced Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 + 4 features Doom Slayer and the skeletal Revenant enemy as playable characters – complete with Doot memes as moves. And id Software’s upcoming prequel, Doom: The Dark Ages, is just a couple of months away and looking fantastic. If you’ve been slacking on the series, now is the time to catch up and score the Doom Anthology SteelBook while it’s at 63% discount for a limited time.
