Marvel Rivals: The 10 Best Defensive Abilities
When it comes to defensive abilities in Marvel Rivals, it’s hard to go wrong with the following options.
The following examples are the best offensive abilities in Marvel Rivals. These skills not only do tons of damage, but they can also aid with the defense of the rest of the team when used appropriately.
Keep in mind that ultimate abilities are not going to be included in this list, as those skills are in their own category. This list is also not in any particular order, as each of these abilities works well in varying situations.
1
Burst Acorn
Squirrel Girl
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Shoot bouncing Burst Acorns
Players would be forgiven for underestimating Squirrel Girl when first seeing her, thanks to her giant bushy tail and army of squirrel besties. However, she can easily become a big problem for the enemy team when played well.
Squirrel Girl’s primary fire is her Burst Acorn, wherein she fires explosive acorns from her slingshot. These acorns are arched projectiles that can bounce off of structures and the environment, but they are also incredibly strong and can easily one-hit kill a Strategist or Duelist. Even Vanguards can go down quickly when her acorns are aimed right. Similar to Junkrat from Overwatch with the strength of her launched projectiles, Squirrel Girl is a Duelist who can rack up damage quickly and efficiently.
2
Culling Turret
The Punisher
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Deploy a Culling Turret that grounds Punisher and blocks damage from the front while dealing massive damage
The Punisher is all about dealing as much damage as possible with various firearms, including the Culling Turret. The static nature of the turret can make Punisher a target very quickly, making this an ability that will only work when there is a strong healer and/or defensive tank to protect him as he fires. If Punisher players don’t have that, then their turret will quickly be destroyed. However, if players do have a strong team composition, they can take out multiple enemies with ease with this ability.
The turret also has a separate health bar from The Punisher, so if it is destroyed, he won’t immediately die. When paired with shields and healing, the Culling Turret can become a nightmare for the enemy team.
3
Savage Claw Strike
Wolverine
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Slash with Adamantium claws for a Claw Strike. Unleashing Feral Leap will enhance it to Berserk Claw Strike for a brief period
Wolverine’s primary ability is Savage Claw Strike, wherein he rapidly lashes out with his Adamantium Claws. This is a strong melee attack, but it becomes even more powerful when paired with Wolverine’s Feral Leap ability. This transforms the Savage Claw Strike into the Berserk Claw Strike.
The Berserk Claw Strike increases Wolverine’s damage significantly, making it easy to annihilate enemies. Savage Claw Strike also charges Wolverine’s ultimate much faster when used against enemies with high health, so target Vanguards to charge his ult quickly and efficiently.
4
Chaos Control
Scarlet Witch
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Unleash Chaos Magic on enemies to deal damage based on a percentage of their Max Health and restore Chaos Energy
Scarlet Witch’s primary attack is her Chaos Control, which is a beam of sorts that can lock onto enemies within her crosshairs. Damage will increase depending on the target’s health pool.
This can become a very irritating ability for the enemy team quickly, especially when the team’s healers are targeted. The infinite nature of her ammo, the ability to track nearby enemies, and the damage scaling makes Chaos Control an offensive skill that can cause a huge problem for the other team if not dealt with.
5
Blaster Barrage
Star-Lord
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Fire a frenzy of shots, causing damage to enemies within range
When it comes to quick maneuvers and great damage, Star-Lord is an excellent choice for a Duelist hero. He is sneaky, can become airborne and his element guns can pack a hefty punch.
Along with a powerful ultimate ability, Star-Lord also has Blaster Barrage, which is also an impressive offensive skill. When using Blaster Barrage, Star-Lord fires off bullets within an 8-meter spherical radius. Each shot does 8 damage per hit, which can lead to plenty of kills if the skill is activated amid enemies with low health bars. Blaster Barrage is also particularly useful when it comes to crowd control, as those caught in the middle of the bullet storm will be forced to flee if their health is low, making it easy to pick them off.
6
Stone Haymaker
The Thing
- Vanguard hero
- In-game description: Deliver a devastating Heavy Blow
Both The Thing and The Hulk are great choices when it comes to a tank hero who gets up close and personal with the enemy with melee strikes. However, The Thing’s Stone Haymaker is a great offensive ability that can be used over and over again thanks to not having a cooldown.

Hero counters to Marvel Rivals’ The Thing need movement-disabling and evasion abilities, and only some do it best.
As well as dealing hefty damage to the enemy receiving the punch, Stone Haymaker also pierces them, causing even more damage. The player will gain an additional 50 Bonus Health while the skill is activated, making it a great defensive and healing ability for The Thing as well as a strong offensive skill.
7
Unibeam
Iron Man
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Fire nano pulse cannons forward
There are three different versions of Iron Man’s Unibeam: Standard, Armor Overdrive, and Gamma Overdrive. The Armor Overdrive version can only be used when the player activates the separate Armor Overdrive ability. The Gamma Overdrive version can be used when there is a Hulk on the team, as he will charge Iron Man with his gamma radiation. The Standard version is effective, but for the most powerful attack possible, opt for the Armor Overdrive or Gamma Overdrive versions of the skill.
With this ability, Iron Man fires a laser beam – or several beams, depending on the version of the skill – that rapidly depletes enemy health when aimed correctly. The maximum range for the beam is 25 meters, and Iron Man moves very slowly when using it, so be sure to only use the skill when minimally exposed.
8
Wrath Of The Seven Seas
Namor
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Launch the trident forward to damage nearby enemies, then direct all Monstro Spawn to perform an enhanced attack on the nearest hit enemy. When the trident hits an enemy, Monstro Spawn enter a berserk state, gaining increased Attack Speed
Namor’s primary fire – Trident of Neptune – is pretty effective in its own right, but it becomes even more powerful when paired with his Monstro Spawn squids via the Wrath of the Seven Seas ability.

The Marvel Universe is brimming with heroes, but some of their powers might be too much or too little to join the Marvel Rivals roster.
When the skill is active, Namor’s squids will attack with more power than their normal attack, making it crucial to have them placed in the appropriate spots. Players also need to make sure that they do not miss their secondary attack, as this is what will activate the squid’s berserk mode.
9
Moon Blade
Moon Knight
- Duelist hero
- In game description: Launch forward a Moon Blade that can bounce between enemies and Ankhs, dealing damage to enemies
Moon Knight can be a frustrating character to play against because of the bouncing mechanic that is present with several of his abilities. His primary fire – Crescent Darts – uses it, but it is also used in his more damaging ability, Moon Blade.
If Moon Knight has placed his Ankhs, the Moon Blade will bounce between both them and the enemies to deal significant damage. This move, alongside his primary fire, can be brutal when used against a group of enemies.
Playing Moon Knight stealthily by placing Ankhs quietly and planning when to throw the Moon Blade or Crescent Darts can lead to some major damage, making it a particularly noteworthy offensive ability.
10
Yat Jee Chung Kuen
Iron Fist
- Duelist hero
- In-game description: Dash forward to pursue the targeted enemy and unleash a flurry of attacks
When it comes to an up-close melee attack that is particularly powerful, Iron Fist’s primary fire is one of the most noteworthy. When Yat Jee Chung Kuen is powered up, Iron Fist’s hits become incredibly fast. When timed right, they can take down a Strategist or Duelist with ease. Players will need to be at point-blank range to do so, but Iron Fist’s movement abilities make it less complex to get into the correct position to do damage without getting killed.
This is a useful skill to use when it comes to jumping into the backline and eliminating Strategists. If an Iron Fist player is skilled, they can unleash a tirade on the backline and escape the area before the other members of the enemy team have even noticed.
