Hunts in Monster Hunter Wilds can range anywhere from being a complete walk in the part, to being very daunting. Certain monsters are extremely straightforward in how they’re fought and don’t require too much thought, while others have very specific strengths and weaknesses you’ll need to exploit.

While certain hunts are going to require bringing along specific items, there are plenty of items that are useful in a more general way. Certain items are useful in basically any situation, or at the very least, are easy to keep on hand in case something unexpected happens, and they suddenly become useful.
You can only have either five or ten of most items on your character at a time; the rest will go into your item box that you can access in camp.
1
Potions/Mega Potions
Item |
Recipe |
---|---|
Potion |
1x Herb |
Mega Potion |
1x Potion + 1x Honey |
No item is nearly as important as healing items. Sure, if you don’t get hit, you won’t need them. But, that is rarely going to be the case, particularly on those hunts that are more difficult. This is especially true when you’re up against a monster for the first time, or using a weapon you’re unfamiliar with.
Your Palico will occasionally throw a heal your way during a fight, but since you can’t control that, it’s not something that you can rely on. When out on your travels, keep an eye out for herbs and honey, and grab them every chance you get. They won’t go to waste.
2
Antidote/Herbal Medicine
Item |
Recipe |
---|---|
Antidote |
1x Antidote Herb |
Herbal Medicine |
1x Antidote + 1x Blue Mushroom |
While situations in which you’re going to get poisoned are few and far between, it can be utterly debilitating when it does happen, if you find yourself unable to get rid of it. Poison is going to slowly reduce your health over time, causing you to use a constant supply of Potions and Mega Potions to stay alive.
If you bring along plenty of Antidote and/or Herbal Medicine, then you won’t have anything to worry about. Antidote is going to remove the poison effect, while Herbal Medicine is going to remove the effect and provide you with a little bit of healing for your troubles.
3
Demondrug/Demon Powder
Item |
Recipe |
---|---|
Demondrug |
1x Catalyst + 1x Might Seed |
Demon Powder |
1x Godbug Essence + 1x Might Seed |
Some monsters are going to take longer to kill than others. This can happen for a variety of reasons: you’re unfamiliar with the monster and don’t know exactly how to deal with them, the monster has a wealth of resistances, or it’s just a more difficult monster in general.
For any of these reasons, increasing your damage is going to make the fight go quicker than it would otherwise. Both Demondrug and Demon Powder are ways to increase your attack power. Demondrug is a consumable that increases your own attack power, while Demon Powder creates a cloud that increases the attack power of any Hunter that passes through it.
4
Flash Pod
Item |
Recipe |
---|---|
Flashpod |
1x Flashbug Phosphor |
Some monsters are going to put an incredible amount of pressure on you, either with certain difficult-to-avoid attacks, or just their general attack pattern. It can be hard to get enough hits in on a monster to make consistent progress when you’re spending most of your time avoiding their attacks.
Flashpods can make situations like this a lot more manageable, blinding a monster for long enough for you to do a meaningful amount of damage. This isn’t going to work against every monster, but most of them suffer the blinding effect to some degree.
5
Dung Pod/Large Dung Pod
Item |
Recipe |
---|---|
Dung Pod |
1x Dung/1x Rolled-Up Dung |
Large Dung Pod |
1x Dung Pod + 1x Nitroshroom |
The world of Monster Hunter Wilds feels like a dynamic, breathing thing. And one of the things that contributes the most to that feeling is the fact that other monsters can show up in the middle of a hunt, and cause particular problems.
If you have an unwelcome guest that appears mid-hunt, hitting them with a Dung Pod is often enough to get them to seek greener pastures. It’ll help ensure you get to fight your target in a less complicated fashion.
Dung Pods are especially beneficial when trying to single out one monster that’s part of a pack.
6
Shock Trap
Item |
Recipe |
---|---|
Shock Trap |
1x Trap Tool + 1x Thunderbug Capacitor |
The Shock Trap is pretty multi-faceted, and can be useful in a wide variety of situations. Primarily, this item is used to fully capture monsters; this is going to immobilize them for a short time, during which you can capture them by hitting them with Tranq Bombs.
But, these aren’t only useful for capturing monsters; the ability to immobilize them makes this an invaluable tool against some of the tougher monsters. Certain monsters, especially the larger ones, have charging attacks that can be tough to avoid. But, if you have a Shock Trap in between you and them, they’ll often move right into it, helping you avoid damage and deal some of your own.
7
Rations/Well-Done Steak
Most of the time, you’ll find it easy to make a nutritious and fulfilling meal in-between your hunts or expeditions. But sometimes, you’re going to forget, or you’re going to be out in the wilds for long enough that the meal effects are going to wear off.
In these situations, a Ration or a Well-Done Steak can make all the difference. These aren’t going to be as beneficial as an actual meal, but a Ration will boost your Stamina, and a Well-Done Steak will boost both Stamina and Health, slightly.
Rations and Well-Done Steak are received as a Supply Item, and are not crafted.
