THPS4’s skating evolution has just just been undone
As first shared by Kotaku, Activision has confirmed that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 will follow the other three games in offering a “streamlined” mode, complete with two-minute goals for players to achieve. This replaces the fully-fledged career mode that made Pro Skater 4 as beloved as it is.
For Some Fans, It’s A Dealbreaker
Ever since Tuesday’s announcement of the long-rumored follow-up to the original remake of the first two Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games, fans have been speculating that the career mode was axed in favor of the two-minute goal system.
Specifically, fans pointed to language included in a PlayStation Blog post that all but guaranteed that the game fans came to love would not be the one released. In that post, it was noted that players would be able to “skate the original parks from THPS3 and THPS4, remade in 4K resolution and given streamlined goals in the two-minute format, along with some new parks to expand your skating options.”
In other words, no career mode, which has now been confirmed.
Naturally, that particular tidbit drew immediate ire from fans, with some immediately calling it a “dealbreaker.” Another player added, “I firmly believe that if you can’t do it right, don’t do it at all. 4’s design was great and this is butchering it.”
At this moment, it’s unclear why exactly Activision and developer Iron Galaxy opted not to include the career mode. It wouldn’t be the only thing from the classics not coming to the remake, as Bam Margera appears to have been cut altogether. Granted, there’s probably a sound reason for that, and not so much for cutting career mode.
