A new Xbox update has been rolled out today with those signed up to the platform’s Insider Program among the first to receive it. However, insiders for whom the update has gone live are reporting that when they started their consoles back up once it had been applied, their profiles had been removed.

VGC was the first to notice Xbox users airing their grievances about the update and, upon testing it, confirmed that the problem with the new update is indeed real. When turning the console on again for the first time after downloading the update, it’s reportedly as if you were turning it on for the first time.

On the surface this is a minor, albeit slightly annoying issue that requires you to sign back in, although easier said than done for those of us who have no idea what our login details are having not needed to input them for years. It seems this factory reset runs a little deeper than that, though. While the games installed on your Xbox will still be there once you have managed to log back in, some other elements of your profile will have disappeared.

Apparently, any wallpaper you had in place will be removed, your system settings will have been reset to default, and perhaps worst of all, depending on the last time you played, your Quick Resume data will have been removed. Some who have suffered the update’s wrath have reached out to Xbox Support for an explanation, but the account is yet to acknowledge the issue or explain what might be causing it at the time of publication.

If you own a Series X or S and you’re worried about the update but you’re not an Insider, you almost certainly don’t need to worry. One of the main reasons the program exists is so people willing to take updates for a test drive can experience teething problems, and those problems can then be highlighted and fixed before the update is rolled out to everyone else.

Even though you are signing up for that risk by becoming an Insider, this particular problem is a step up from what members of the Insider program are likely okay with being subjected to. Having profiles wiped from your console by an update isn’t great whether you’re an Insider or not. Hopefully the problem is an easy one to fix, but for Insiders, it’s likely already too late. Just prepare yourselves the next time you turn on your Xbox, and try to find those login details before you do.
