What Happened to Sabo After Punk Hazard, Explained

Sabo has always been a unique character in the world of One Piece. Despite being so important to Luffy’s backstory, Sabo was thought to be dead until his first official appearance during the Dressrosa Arc. From here, Sabo becomes an incredibly vital character in the story, acting as a high-ranking member of the Revolutionary Army, as well as one of the few characters in One Piece who witnessed the secrets of the world and lived to tell the tale.

Despite this, Sabo’s journey being a member of the brotherhood between himself, Luffy, and Ace, Sabo actually lost the memory of his past relationships, leading to his absence from the first half of the story. However, Ace’s death acted as the catalyst to jog Sabo’s memory, leading to his most recent exploits in the series. Here’s what happened to Sabo in One Piece, specifically after the Punk Hazard Arc.

After Luffy defeats Caesar and makes his way to the island of Dressrosa, at the same time, the members of the Revolutionary Army, Sabo, Koala, and Hack, are also sent on a mission to put a stop to the Donquixote Pirates’ weapon trading ring. However, at the same time, the One Piece villain, Doflamingo, as a means of luring out Luffy, holds a tournament in the Dressrosa Colosseum where the main prize is Ace’s Flare-Flare Devil Fruit. Of course, similar to how the prize attracted Luffy to compete, word of Luffy’s performance and the reward drew Sabo to reunite with his little brother at the tournament.

From here, Sabo and Luffy decided to swap places, with Sabo disguising himself as Lucy, Luffy’s alter-ego, in order to claim One Piece’s Flare-Flare Fruit in the tournament finale. In this fight, Sabo manages to utilize high levels of combat expertise to claim the fruit, besting characters like Burgess, Diamante, and Bartolomeo. From here, he quickly eats the fruit, gaining the powers of his late brother, which he then uses to destroy the floor of the Dressrosa arena.

Next, after destroying the arena, as Luffy and the gladiators stormed Doflamingo’s castle, Sabo helped their efforts by clashing with the One Piece Admiral, Fujitora, proving he has a fair level of strength. On top of this, Sabo also held back most of the Marines, preventing them from joining the fight between the Straw Hats and One Piece’s Donquixote Pirates. After this, Burgess, a captain of Blackbeard’s crew, planned on killing Luffy for his Devil Fruit but was intercepted and defeated by Sabo. At the end of the Dressrosa Arc, Sabo parted ways with the Straw Hat Crew, giving Zoro a Vivre Card to give to Luffy.

After this, Sabo made a few more brief appearances before making a major return during the Reverie Arc in One Piece. After escaping the destruction of their former base, Sabo and the Revolutionary Army created a new base on Momoiro Island. Soon after, Sabo infiltrates the Holy Land of Mary Geiose, alongside the Revolutionary Army Commanders, where he and his group resolve to save Kuma from his enslavement there. Here, while his companions are holding off the Admirals, Sabo is able to find the keys to save Kuma and meets Bonney, whom he learns is the daughter of Kuma.

Although the mission proved to be successful, while at Mary Geiose, in the castle of Pangaea, Sabo witnessed One Piece’s Five Elders and Imu in the midst of executing Nefertari Cobra, which he attempted to stop. From here, Sabo rescues Cobra, though this did not last for long. Cobra sacrifices himself to let Sabo escape and asks him to bring his final message, that the Nefertari family carries the will of the D, to Vivi. Despite being innocent, the World Government pins the death of Cobra on Sabo.

Finally, Sabo attempts to flee to One Piece’s kingdom of Lulusia, an island freed by the Revolutionaries, though he witnesses the kingdom being completely destroyed by Imu. However, he manages to escape with some survivors, returning to the Revolutionary Army base, and informing Dragon and the army about what he witnessed in his travels. In the end, although this is the last thing that Sabo has done in the story, with the Revolutionary Army most likely becoming active soon during One Piece’s Elbaf Arc, he will return to the story soon.
