Hazelight Studios, a game company known for its impressive array of local (and online) multiplayer cooperative experiences, has another game with co-op as the main focus, Split Fiction, which puts players into the shoes of two writers, Mio and Zoe. The former is utterly obsessed with sci-fi, and Zoe is into fantasy. Not going to spoil anything that happens in the beginning, but let’s just say that this unlikely duo will have to work together despite not being a fan of each other’s tastes.
Split Fiction can only be played cooperatively, which means that you must find a friend who’ll sit with you to complete the 12 to 16-hour story. Luckily, the developers have graciously come up with a solution to help players find a co-op buddy, and that’s the Friend’s Pass. With this pass, one person can purchase Split Fiction and then share the game with a second player without needing to spend a single dollar (and this can be done online). However, there are some things you should know before trying it out.

How to Get Split Fiction’s Friend Pass
Whether you are playing Split Fiction on Steam, PS5, or Xbox Series X/S, you must first find and install the Split Fiction Friend’s Pass on your digital storefront of choice. It may be a little difficult to find since some of these storefronts are a mess to go through, but we have links here for each store to make it a little easier for you.
If you search ‘Split Fiction – Friend’s Pass’ on the marketplaces, you might have an easier time finding it.
It’s also worth noting that unless you’re playing on PC via Steam, you will have to be subscribed to either Xbox Game Pass or PS Plus to play with people online. Even if you’re the person using the Friend’s Pass, you still have to subscribe.
How to Invite a Friend in Split Fiction
If you’re the person that owns Split Fiction and wants to invite a friend that has the Friend’s Pass installed, follow these steps:
- Click on ‘Play Online’ from the main menu.
- If your friend is playing via Steam, you can choose to host on Steam’s servers. Otherwise, you must use EA’s servers, which means you’ll need to make an EA account –your friend will have to make one as well.
- Click on ‘Invite a Friend’
- Search for their username, and the invite will be sent.
Make Sure Crossplay is Enabled
If any issues arise, make sure both players have crossplay enabled on their consoles. For PS5, the crossplay toggle is in the Privacy Settings section of the Options of Split Fiction. Xbox players will have to enable crossplay via their Microsoft account settings.
