Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 Shouldn’t Be the Series’ Final Remasters

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Shouldn't Be the Series' Final Remasters

Gamers got a nostalgic surprise this week, as it was officially announced that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skate 3+4 are getting remastered. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 are beloved entries in the franchise, and now that they’re getting a fresh coat of paint, fans will get to have a fun ride down memory lane.

Activision is bringing Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 to modern consoles, and while this is exciting, the remasters hopefully won’t stop there. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was released back in 2021, and this next remaster is bound to bring even more fun, but there are still other entries in the franchise that are just as deserving of remasters. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise has featured plenty of great entries, but the Underground series is one of the most deserving of a tune-up.

Tony Hawk’s Underground Should Be Next in Line For the Remaster Treatment

A Skate-Filled One-Two Punch

  • Tony Hawk’s Underground – 2003
  • Tony Hawk’s Underground 2 – 2004

One year after Pro Skater 4, Underground hit the scene, and it completely shook up the formula that Pro Skater had embraced for years. Just as the name implies, Underground ditched the pro focus of its predecessors and focused on a custom underdog character who rises through the ranks. This time around, there is a full-blown narrative that players have to follow that details one’s character’s journey. It’s a fun disruption of what the Pro Skater games had previously become so well known for, and that continues once again in Underground 2. The legacy of the Underground series lives on as a favorite entry for many fans, and with Pro Skater 3+4 set for launch this summer, the coming years will hopefully make an Underground 1+2 remaster a reality.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 launches July 11.

Tony Hawk’s Underground Introduced Game-Changing Features

  • For the first time in the franchise, players could dismount their board.
  • Wall Push/Wall Plant
  • Acid Drop
  • Hip Transfer
  • Driving
  • Pressure Flips
  • Double-Tap Grind
  • Face Mapping for character creation

Underground introduced an overhaul of previous skate mechanics by both refining staple moves and adding new ones to the mix. Those who got to experience the leap from Pro Skater 4 to the first Underground were met with a thrilling moment, as the gameplay had improved by leaps and bounds. The early 2000s were a great time for skaters who also happened to be gamers, and Underground may have been the apex of that moment in time.

Of course, Underground still featured the major skating stars of that time, like Bucky Lasek and Rodney Mullen, but focusing the game on the personal story of a character that players help build added a lot more depth to a franchise that was once more focused on being a fun pastime. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series may have helped bring the extreme sports genre to gaming, but Underground served as an example of how skating games can be a great avenue to tell stories, too.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 will be available on Xbox Game Pass.

Tony Hawk’s Underground Fans Will Hopefully Get Good News Down the Road

Right now, there is no indication that Activision has any plans to make an Underground 1+2 happen in the future, but it’s not impossible. Nostalgia for Toy Hawk’s Pro Skater runs deep, and finally getting a fresh version of 3+4 is great news. Still, this is hopefully just a stepping stone for an Underground remaster to become the next in line.

Considering it’s Pro Skater 4‘s follow-up, it would only make sense, but this remains to be seen. Until then, hope for an Underground remaster continues. This day may never come, but on the bright side, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series can be fully enjoyed on modern hardware when 3+4 arrive this summer.
