While it may feel like a bygone era now, there was a time when everyone was playing flash games as much as they were playing typical home console games. It was a simpler era of gaming, but it was one that is underrated for just how much creativity small creators were able to capture, often on their own.
Flash games were fun little free-to-play games that anyone could throw on at any time for minutes or even hours of fun. Thanks to generally being free from restrictions, the game quality always came down to how creative the creator could get in the development process. Some flash games were even so good, they eventually got home console releases.

Dad first appeared in two Newgrounds cartoons before appearing in his own game. Dadgame’s a fantastic 2D beat-’em-up with the signature 2000s flash game art style that is as charming as ever, along with a surprising amount of content and challenge on offer.
While the main game won’t take you very long, as you’d expect from a flash title, there are plenty of extra modes, secrets, and ultra-difficult boss fights. Gaining 100 percent completion is quite the task, and even though beating Mecha-Death is extremely hard, it feels great once you’ve finally conquered him.

A Great Worms Alternative

When searching through flash games, you’ll often see clones of other titles, and most of the time, they don’t stack up against the originator. One that actually ended up being a fantastic alternative was Territory War. This series was a clone of Worms and was so popular at the time that it led to confusion over the two, with Let’s Play videos being mislabeled.
The title wasn’t “we have Worms at home,” as its strategic gameplay stood up against the legendary Team17 series. The second instalment was the best and most popular, featuring great online play.

Dr. Stanley’s House 2
One Of The Greatest Story-Driven Flash Games

Following directly after the events of the original, you explore more areas, do more complicated puzzles, and see one of the most ambitious Hideo Kojima-like stories in all of flash games. There are even some bonus puzzles you can do for 100 percent completion, which is the cherry on top.

Released back in 2005, Interactive Buddy is a unique but silly flash game. You get to spend time with your little buddy, although he probably doesn’t enjoy the time together as much as you do, thanks to all the harm you can inflict on him.
Trapping the little guy in a room, you get to play around with a variety of weapons and effects, slowly earning money to unlock more ridiculous ways to play with your Interactive Buddy. The game is definitely a bit messed up, but everyone loved it back in the day.

Out of the vast sea of motorcycle games, the best was Trials, but unfortunately, the original titles were made in Java, not flash. The best that was made in flash has to be the Max Dirt Bike games. Launched in 2007, the original Max Dirt Bike was a challenging dirt bike title that tasked you with simply making it to the end without wiping out.
Thanks to all the obstacles and the way that your dirt bike controls, that task is surprisingly tricky. Just how tough the game is made it infinitely replayable, even for those who eventually managed to beat the tricky puzzle-like platformer.

Made back in 2008, Dino Run was one of the many excellent games in the runner genre of flash games. You take control of your dinosaur as you attempt to outcast your impending extinction. In a way, the game is reminiscent of roguelikes, even if it wasn’t quite as robust.
The fun level design, cute character graphics, and simple gameplay made it a hit that was hard to put down. Each and every time you start a run, all you want is to get your little dino to safety, but sadly, that probably won’t be the case.

N is a game that forces you to try and retry almost every level you’ll end up playing thanks to its high difficulty. Despite it all, N feels incredibly fair, and the platforming action made it a game that everyone was happy to give a try.

The Super Smash Flash games were a great option for people who wanted to experience some Super Smash Bros. party game action but couldn’t quite find a way to play the game. Outside of the fun mish-mash of characters, you get a solid, while slightly stripped-down, Super Smash Bros experience in a flash game. It even had voice acting, with an early role for Kira Buckland, who’d become known for the voice of 2B, Jolyne Cujoh from JoJo, and many, many others.

There really aren’t many other quirks thrown into the mix, keeping the playing experience as simple as possible. While that may not sound as appealing to modern gamers who never experienced it, you can’t knock it until you’ve given it a try yourself.
