Split Fiction Features A Cameo From The It Takes Two Elephant You Tortured

Summary

  • If there’s one scene that everyone remembers from It Takes Two, it’s when we murdered Cutie the elephant.
  • Cutie is back from the dead for a cameo in Split Fiction, where she’s now the mascot of a pet shop.
  • Don’t worry, though – you can murder her all over again if you like.

Split Fiction has a surprising cameo from that stuffed elephant you basically murdered in It Takes Two, and even lets you be horrible to her all over again.

As you’d hope from 2021’s Game of the Year winner, It Takes Two is memorable for a whole lot of reasons, from its constantly changing power-ups and abilities to its inventive toy-sized environments. If there’s one thing that everyone remembers It Takes Two for, though, it’s a mid-game scene that absolutely traumatised us all.

PSA: Split Fiction Is Not As Casual As It Takes Two

Split Fiction is an elevation of It Takes Two, not a continuation, and it will leave some players behind

I am, of course, talking about the moment when May and Cody strangely decide to make Rose cry by hurting her stuffed elephant, Cutie. What follows after that decision is an uncomfortable torture sequence where Cutie begs for her life and the two parents respond by ripping her ear and legs off. Like I said – memorable.

Cutie Is Back In Split Fiction

It seems that, despite the brutal murder, Hazelight has a soft spot for Cutie, as she makes a surprise cameo during the early hours of Split Fiction. In the game’s first chapter, Mio and Zoe find themselves exploring a neon city that comes from one of Mio’s stories. As they reach the ground level of the cyberpunk world, a pet shop can be spotted at a certain point in the level.

That toyshop has a familiar face sitting on top of it seemingly as the mascot – Cutie from It Takes Two. The queen of the Magic Castle is looking a little grubbier than she did in It Takes Two, but she’s seemingly found a new position as the ruler of a random shop called Mastodon Pet Store in Mio’s world. I guess Mio must have had a Cutie doll of her own.

Cutie’s appearance is a nice nod to It Takes Two, but that’s not where the easter egg ends. If the player controlling Zoe uses her gravity whip while near Cutie, you can basically re-enact It Takes Two by once again removing her ear and leg. This will cause Mio to tell Zoe to “respect the queen”, referencing Cutie’s status as the ruler of Magic Castle. At least we don’t have to hear her screaming in pain this time.
