Miniature, Silver, and Gold Crowns Explained

Miniature, Silver, and Gold Crowns Explained

If you head into your Large Monster Field Guide in Monster Hunter Wilds, you might start to notice that some of the monster listings have crown icons near their picture. There are silver crowns, miniature gold crowns, and large gold crowns that you can acquire for most of the Large Monsters, but what do they mean, and how do you get them in Monster Hunter Wilds?

There are also a number of Trophies/Achievements associated with collecting said crowns, so here’s a guide on how it all works.

Monster Hunter Wilds is a complex game with lots of hidden mechanics. Here are some things that the tutorials don’t cover.

What are Crowns for in Monster Hunter Wilds?

Size Is Everything

Most of the large monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds have a small version and a large version. If you manage to find a monster out in the wild and pull out your binoculars and zoom in on them, there’s a chance that a crown might appear over the monster’s name, either showing a silver crown or a gold crown (or neither).

By hunting the smallest version (or largest version of a Large Monster), you will get the associated crown in the monster’s entry log in the field guide. The Miniature Gold Crown is slightly wider and shorter than the regular Gold Crown, which is slightly taller.

If you see a monster with a silver crown, that just means it’s a little bit smaller (or a little bit bigger) than average, but killing/capturing it will not get you the special gold crowns.

Only 26 out of the 29 Large Monsters need crowns for you to collect. The three monsters that you don’t need to worry about are… Jin Dahaad, Zoh Shia, and Guardian Arkveld.

The hard part about collecting the Miniature Crown and the Gold Crown for 26 monsters (52 Crowns) is that it’s all based on RNG –which means whether you run into a large or small version of a monster is completely random. It also means that it will be very time-consuming to get them all.

How to Farm for Monster Crowns in Monster Hunter Wilds

Get Crowns Fast

There are a couple of different methods for finding Monster Crowns fast in Monster Hunter Wilds, but they all pretty much rely on you resting or quitting out of the game to reset the world map (or just a specific biome).

For example, if you’re trying to specifically hunt for a monster’s crown that inhabits the Windward Plains, like a Quematrice, you can hop into the locale, use your binoculars (from the Essential Tools pouch), and check to see if there’s a gold crown on it. If not, head to a nearby Pop-Up Camp (or use your BBQ Spit) to rest and alter the environment and time of day. Not only will this reset the Windward Plains, but it’ll also reset the other biomes.

Another neat trick to keep in mind is that once you spot a crown monster in the area, you can open your map and save that specific monster as an Investigation for later. This means you can speak to Alma (or use your tent) to start the Investigation as a new quest and share it with friends who also need the Crown monster.

We tested it, and it seems that the monster in question will still bear the Crown mark. Investigations can also be done up to three times before they’re gone.
