Collecting monster parts is always important in Monster Hunter, and Monster Hunter Wilds‘ approach to the mechanic includes a few new wrinkles. That isn’t to say that farming materials is any less of a priority than it was in past games. Rather, players have to take a slightly different approach due to a few small yet notable changes made to the formula. Hunters are still perfectly capable of collecting all of the materials they need, and they will need to collect quite a lot. However, Monster Hunter Wilds‘ take on the common task has a few key distinctions.
If players want new equipment in Monster Hunter Wilds, then they have to forge it themselves. Most of the materials that players will need for these recipes will come from the monsters that they face off with in the game’s various hunts. Every large monster typically brings their own armor set, as well as a selection of weapons that can be forged from their parts. Some materials are common, while rarer parts may require players to break certain parts of a monster during a hunt for a better chance at obtaining them. The more players hunt, the more materials they’ll have for the smith.
Monster Hunter Wilds Makes a Few Changes to Material Gathering
Monster Hunter Wilds Removes Mid-Hunt Material Drops
One thing that players may notice early in Monster Hunter Wilds is that monsters no longer drop materials during a hunt. In previous games, monsters could drop additional parts during a hunt, typically when a part breaks. These parts would appear as shiny crystals on the ground for players to pick up. In Monster Hunter Wilds, crafting materials are no longer dropped on the ground. Instead, monsters only drop items such as slinger ammo during a fight. The exception to this is severed parts, such as tails. However, these parts have to be carved like fallen monsters, rather than picked off the ground.
While materials won’t break off of monsters during battle, discarded materials from active monsters on the map can sometimes be found.
Wounds Can Offer Bonus Materials in Monster Hunter Wilds
Another addition to the formula of material farming is Monster Hunter Wilds‘ wounds system. Wounds are a new mechanic that lets players deal extra damage by attacking injured areas, and even stagger them with enough concentrated damage. In addition to these bonuses, breaking a wound can also grant players additional materials. While this will generally grant players common materials, it still helps to build up their stockpile, potentially cutting down on the amount of hunts needed for their desired equipment. Breaking wounds makes hunts go by quicker, but they can also help players gain a lot of materials just as efficiently.
Alma Helps Players Find Materials in Monster Hunter Wilds
While she may not directly grant players additional materials, players will get help from Monster Hunter Wilds‘ handler Alma when it comes to gathering them. Alma frequently chimes in during hunts to offer advice. When players aren’t actively fighting a monster though, she’ll help them find materials they might have otherwise missed. She will point out fallen monsters and severed parts that they have not carved yet. This is especially helpful for severed tails, which often grant some of their respective monster’s rarer materials. Alma’s material-spotting ability combined with her story role makes her one of the best handlers that Monster Hunter has seen to date.
Players will inevitably spend plenty of time going on hunts to gather materials for Monster Hunter Wilds‘ armor sets, just like in past games. While hunts remain as the player’s source for most of these materials, players should be aware of how the system has changed. Thankfully, collecting ingredients hasn’t been made more difficult. In fact, Monster Hunter Wilds arguably makes farming a little easier than before thanks to wound bonuses and Alma’s assistance. The process of gathering materials in Monster Hunter Wilds might just flow better than ever.
