Doctor Who has come a long way from its origins as a small-budget project made for the British market, gaining more and more fans internationally as the years have passed. More recently, the franchise made a big leap forward when it became available to more viewers internationally via Disney+, coinciding with the show getting a new lead in Ncuti Gatwa. Despite a pretty unique start to this new iteration, rumors claimed that the show had done poorly on the streamer and Disney would be cutting it loose, leading to pessimistic conversation around the show even after this was refuted. Thankfully, the Doctor Who season 2 premiere date was officially confirmed despite the negative buzz surrounding it.

While it was recently revealed by Russell T. Davies that every Doctor is essentially written the same way, a recent promo seems to suggest that the latest incarnation of the character is getting some special treatment in one episode of his upcoming second season. In the German-language version of the recent trailer released for the second season uploaded by AMadmanNotABox on X, fans can briefly see the Doctor and his new companion face off against a new animated foe, with the two being drawn into his cartoon world. While there have been a few animated projects featuring the Doctor in the past, this marks the very first time that the medium has made an appearance in the mainline Doctor Who series, and it’s making that debut in a big way.
It’s not easy to bring something new to the table on a show that’s been going on longer than the cast and crew have been alive, but that’s what this decision has managed to pull off. There has been some concern from certain corners of the fandom that the writing on the next season of Doctor Who might be an issue, as the writers seemed geared to throw the show’s subtle balance between levity and seriousness off course in favor of more laughs. While it remains to be seen how that plays out, bringing in such a novel idea is certainly a good sign of the mindset and ability at work behind the scenes. In addition to this, it’s also been noted that the upcoming Doctor Who season will be set mostly away from Earth, and that’s another good sign that the team is leaning into their creativity in more ways than just baiting laughs. Bringing fans to unfamiliar territory on strange new worlds is certainly a return to form for the franchise, and if the new approach can find a new equilibrium point for humor and hard-hitting stories, then fans could get the best of both.
Setting a new first bodes well for the new season, and it’s not the only thing. It’s even recently been revealed that Doctor Who’s viewing figures provide a positive outlook on its future, painting a much different picture from the rumors swirling around following the conclusion of the first season on Disney+. If the second season comes out with new, innovative ideas like the introduction to an animated Doctor, then there’s a good chance things will go even better this time around. For now, fans will have to wait a bit before the new season premieres on Disney+.
Doctor Who is available to stream on Disney+, with a new season set to debut on April 12.
