Born Again Episode 1 & 2's Easter Eggs

This article contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episodes 1 & 2

Daredevil: Born Again is officially here and the Man Without Fear is back to fighting crime, though his return to hurling his baton around and truly being Daredevil is far more short lived and has less screen time than people likely expected. The first two episodes are now officially on Disney+ and with them came a whole host of Easter eggs.

Some of those Easter eggs were nods to the original Daredevil show that came before Born Again. Some of those are to other Marvel shows that came before and after both. And some were nods to the comics and were the first to appear on television at all.

Josie’s Bar Makes Return In Daredevil: Born Again

Early on in the first episode of Born Again, there’s a nod to the original Netflix series. Josie’s was not just a hub where the Matt, Foggy and Karen would hang out, but it was also a kind of sign of the neighborhood they were in and the clientele they represented. The barmaid with the titular name needed their legal help and in return, her bar was one of their bases of operations. Depending on who was asked, they even got to drink for free (Josie said they did not)

Kirsten McDuffie is well known to Daredevil comic book readers as someone who is a kind of friendly competitor to Matt Murdock in the courtroom as she starts out working in District Attorney’s office and then eventually she comes over to his law firm. Further on down the line in the comic run, Matt and Kirsten strike up a romantic relationship. However in Born Again, it appears for now the relationship will be one of friendship as she was starting to strike up a light romance with Foggy before he was killed 10 minutes into “Heaven’s Half Hour.”

Tracksuit Mafia Make A Return In Daredevil: Born Again

The First Of Many Nods Toward Hawkeye

Early on in “Heaven’s Half Hour” the audience is shown that the Fisks are still very much in the organized crime business as Vanessa is holding a meeting with various criminal characters and one of the most prominent members of this group is not only wearing a tracksuit but has it mentioned that he’s wearing it.

The Tracksuit Mafia were a big part of the Hawkeye series on Disney+ that officially brought Kingpin into the MCU before Born Again. They were also a big part of the comic book storyline that Hawkeye was based on, which also introduced Kate Bishop to the MCU, even if she hasn’t made another appearance since.

A Sort Of Return Of Ben Urich From The Original Daredevil

Carrying On The Family Name

While Ben Urich is still very much dead, his niece is carrying on his work, just in a different way. BB Urich makes an early appearance in Daredevil: Born Again as the host as a kind of web series that does investigative journalism for the new age of journalism.

The reveal that she’s a relative of the veteran reporter from the original Netflix series doesn’t come right away, but when she gets to meet Kingpin (thanks to one of his campaign staffers having a crush on her) she lets it slip. Kingpin also gives a nod to the original show, admitting that he knew BB’s uncle. Of course he doesn’t detail how their relationship ended or the role he had in ending Ben’s life. It’s unknown whether BB knows all the details and that’s why she’s looking for an interview with the newly elected mayor.

The Big Daredevil: Born Again Love Interest

Karen Glenn is first introduced as someone who might be able to help Matt work through the death of Foggy Nelson, but after a very awkward start to their meeting, the sparks very obviously fly. Glenn is a love interest of Daredevil in the comics who is clearly going to be used against him in the Disney+ show considering she’s also a marriage counselor for Wilson and Vanessa Fisk. It seems unlikely that the man who always thinks four steps ahead didn’t know that when he decided to enlist her help.

It seems unlikely that the man who always thinks four steps ahead didn’t know that when he decided to enlist her help.

Karen has another little not to Daredevil with the title of the book she is promoting when Kingpin’s flunkies come to her for help. The book is titled: “Living Without Fear.” The name is a very obvious nod towards one of the masked vigilante’s nicknames, “The Man Without Fear.” Is it also a bit of foreshadowing that the two will eventually get very close and move in together? There are seven more episodes of Daredevil: Born Again this season to find out.
