While JRPGs in the truest sense of the word are specific to Japan, we’ve seen lots of incredible games from other countries adopting the format. In 2023, Sea of Stars won my heart as one of the best RPGs on PC, following in the footsteps of games like Chrono Trigger. Now, Edge of Memories is shaping up to do something similar with real-time action akin to Xenoblade Chronicles, and it’s due to arrive on Steam this year.
Described by publisher Nacon as an “indie JRPG made in France,” Edge of Memories comes from the Montpellier-based Midgar Studio, which previously brought us Edge of Eternity. While this new game takes place in the same universe, Midgar says it wants to create something “accessible to both fans and newcomers, combining the richness of JRPGs with an artistic touch inspired by French animation.”

Edge of Memories certainly has some punch behind its development. Among the creators involved are Nier writer Sawako Natori, Xenoblade Chronicles X character designer Raita Kazama, and Nier and Nier Automata singer Emi Evans. As if that wasn’t enough, it features the composer duo of Yasunori Mitsuda, best known for his work on legendary RPG Chrono Trigger and the magnificent Sea of Stars, and Mariam Abounnasr, who joined Mitsuda on the spectacular Xenoblade Chronicles 3 score. Expect it to sound just as good as it looks, then.
A plague known as the Corrosion is transforming humans and wildlife alike into dangerous abominations. As young Soul Whisperer Eline, you’ll travel the land of Avaris helping to heal these tortured souls. Fortunately, Eline is also more than capable in combat. Unlike its turn-based predecessor, battles in Edge of Memories offer real-time action akin to Xenoblade or Granblue Fantasy Relink as you chain together stylish combos alongside your two companions.
The early teasers already make a strong first impression – there’s some stunning world and creature design at play here, with delightfully weird and wonderful monsters that I can’t wait to take on in battle. Midgar also promises plenty of customization for your allies, the ability to transform into a rage-filled Berserker to unleash “merciless executions” on your enemies, and even a loyal feline mount, the Nekaroo.
“We are thrilled to expand the world of the ‘Edge of’ franchise with a new installment that takes on a fresh artistic direction and marks a turning point in gameplay, shifting from the strategic turn-based style of its predecessor in favor of a more dynamic and immersive action RPG approach,” Midgar CEO Jérémy Zeler-Maury says. “As true JRPG enthusiasts, we have poured a lot of love into this project, and we can’t wait to share it with both fans of the genre and newcomers alike.”
Edge of Memories is set to launch in fall 2025. You can wishlist it now on Steam if you’re eager to stay up to date with further news and information.
