Trading with NPCs is a decent way to get rare goods in Monster Hunter Wilds, but some of the more useful items often need more exotic materials, such as the elusive Genesis Opal.

Players can find tons of materials like fossils and Novacrystals in MH Wilds by exploring the world. However, items like Genesis Opals appear only during specific times. Getting some of these items might seem difficult, but once you figure out how, where, and when they appear, it’ll only be a matter of time before you get as many opals as you need.

MH Wilds Magnificent Fossil map

Genesis Opals can be found in the Oilwell Basin, Ruins of Wyveria, and Windward Plains. However, the gathering points for these only appear during Magnificent Fossil Emergences.

Emergences are randomly-occuring events that see a significant increase in certain types of resources. In the case of a Magnificent Fossil Emergences, these cause the eponymous Magnificent Fossils to spawn in certain areas of any of the three maps mentioned above.

Like most other resources in MH Wilds, you can see the locations of Magnificent Fossils on your map. Open the Environment Overview menu to find the closest Magnificent Fossil gathering point to your location. Otherwise, use the directional keys to navigate to the map’s Filter settings. From there, you can find the rest of the fossils in the region.

You can tell if an Emergence is close to happening by checking the Forecast tab in the Environment Overview menu. Then, you can Rest in your tent until that time comes.

Geologist Armor Skill

Players can wear armor pieces that have the Geologist skill to get more materials from gathering points. You’ll need Geologist 2 to get an extra Genesis Opal from Magnificent Fossil points.

Pieces of the low-rank Chainmail armor set have the Geologist skill, and all players start with the entire set in their inventory if they didn’t choose it as their starting armor. If you’d rather not swap armor pieces, you can always get and use Decorations with the Geologist skill.

What Are Genesis Opals For?

Genesis Opals, much like other Special Items, can be traded for useful resources. Players can either speak to item exchange NPCs in villages or Nata in any Base Camp to start trading.

The exact items you can get from trading Genesis Opals can change, so there’s no telling what you can get. Still, considering how Nata is right infront of your Base Camp tent at all times, it wouldn’t hurt to check what the other villagers have in store for you.
