Monster Hunter Wilds features several optional quests that may task you to do something other than hunting monsters. At times, the NPCs at the different bases might have a new quest for you, and completing these quests may reward you with money, guild points, and other useful materials.

Fishing for Flavor is one of the side quests that become available after completing Chapter 3, and it tasks you with catching a rare and delicious fish, the Gravid Bowfin. This quest is so tricky because the game doesn’t tell you where to look for the Gravid Bowfin, let alone how to catch it.
How To Start Fishing For Flavor
You can begin the Fishing for Flavor quest by talking to Kanya at the Base Camp inside the Scarlet Forest. Kanya can be found towards the far end of the base camp, near a little pond. The side quest becomes available in Chapter 4 and is the third side quest that you can receive from this NPC.
You’ll have to complete the initial fishing training and then the Seeking the Goldenfish side quest before you can talk to Kanya to begin the Fishing for Flavor. After initiating the quest, Kanya will ask you to catch a rare fish called the Gravid Bowfin.
Where To Find The Gravid Bowfin
Despite being a fairly rare fish in the grand scheme of things, you can find the Gravid Bowfin right where Kanya is standing, in the pond inside the base camp in Scarlet Forest. However, this fish doesn’t spawn all the time, and you might have to reload or fast-travel a few times to get it to pop up.
Besides the base camp in Scarlet Forest, this fish also spawns in a number of other locations, such as near the Icy Shore area in the Iceshard Cliffs region and the Oasis in Windward Plains.
Gravid Bowfin has a fairly higher chance of spawning during Plenty Season and at night.
The Gravid Bowfin’s appearance features a light brown color with bright green eyes when seen from above. This fish is quite thin and has a small and rounded head. Due to its distinct appearance, you can easily spot this fish in the water without having to fish. If you don’t find it in the body of water, you can simply fast-travel to another location.
Now, after making sure you’ve found Gravid Bowfin, you’ll have to catch it. You will need to use the Emerald Jitterbait lure to get the Gravid Bowfin’s attention. Simply aim the lure in the water near this fish’s location and reel it back a little.
If you’ve done everything right, the Gravid Bowfin will bite the lure, and you can reel it in to catch it. After that, you will have to return to Kanya to complete the Fishing for Flavor quest. Kanya will state that the fish is yours to keep and can be used in cooking meals.
The Jeweled Mullet Roe, which is obtained every time you catch a Gravid Bowfin, can be added to a custom meal as part of the Finishing Touches. Adding Jeweled Mullet Roe as the Finishing Touch to a custom meal will increase your Elemental Resistance by five for the duration of the meal effects.
