Wednesday Season 2 Needs To Build On The Addams Family’s Backstory

Summary

  • Wednesday season 2 should focus more on the Addams Family’s spooky origins and history.
  • Season 2 aims to reveal secrets and introduce new villains tied to the Addams lineage.
  • The new season plans to expand the cast to bring back the original Addams Family feel.

The Addams Family’s backstory deserves a closer look in Wednesday season 2, and the gothic comedy show could really benefit from it. The first season of the Netflix hit focused more on the titular character and her adventures at Nevermore Academy, but it only scratched the surface of her family’s eerie history.

Wednesday season 1 introduced her parents, Gomez and Morticia Addams, played by Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones respectively. Despite some occasional flashbacks, the show is yet to dig up their mysterious past or explore the rest of the Addams Family members. Season 2 – expected to be released in late 2025 or early 2026 – is the perfect opportunity to change that.

Season 2 Could Reveal Their Spooky Origins

Beyond the Netflix series, The Addams Family has been a pop culture phenomenon for decades across print, live-action (both film and TV), and animated media. Given that the Jenna Ortega-led show was clearly a character-centric spinoff, it was natural for the focus to be solely on her – the eerie teenage daughter – rather than the rest of the family. However, the others are simply too iconic to ignore, and bringing them into the fold could set up some exciting storylines and conflicts for Wednesday season 2.

While the pilot season did allude to the family’s history, the upcoming second season could go even further. This would explain what makes the Addams Family so spooky and how they became who they are. Season 1 used flashbacks effectively to tell parts of the story, and season 2 could do the same by showing moments from not just Gomez and Morticia’s past, but other family members’ histories too. These glimpses into the past could reveal important secrets or introduce new villains connected to the Addams lineage.

What Role Will The Addams Family Play In Wednesday?

Season 2 Has More Horror, Less Romance, And New Characters

Characters like Fred Armisen’s Uncle Fester were a fun addition to Wednesday season 1. He had some memorable moments, like when he used his ability to generate electricity to revive the sentient hand, Thing. Despite only a single-episode guest appearance, Fester is reportedly getting his own spin-off series from Netflix. Before that, though, Wednesday season 2 should shed more light on what he was doing before showing up here, as well as his place in the Addams family.

Other characters, like Wednesday’s brother Pugsley Addams or the family’s loyal butler Lurch, also deserve to have their characters fleshed out. Moreover, every update surrounding Wednesday season 2’s development, casting, and filming suggests a bigger focus on the Addams family. Jenna Ortega, who will also serve as an executive producer, shared her thoughts on this with Elle Fanning on Variety‘s Actors on Actors in June 2023.

We’ve decided we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more. … We’re ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great. … And I’m just so curious. I want to see the outfits, new characters that are coming in, scripts, and they were gracious enough to let me put the producer hat on.

Are New Addams Family Characters Coming?

Wednesday could still remain the star of her show, yet her other family members could make just as much of an impact if show creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar decided to give them more screen time. Season 1 showed glimpses of Gomez and Morticia’s past at Nevermore Academy, but there’s still much more to uncover. Gough and Millar have hinted that Wednesday season 2 will introduce new Addams family members from the lore.

New additions to the Wednesday cast include at least one more Addams family member – Grandmama, played by Joanna Lumley. Several other actors have also joined in undisclosed roles, some of which might be new members of the iconic family. The Addams family is known for its long and mysterious lineage, and characters like Aunt Ophelia and Cousin Itt have yet to appear in the Netflix series.

The most notable newcomer in Wednesday season 2 is Lady Gaga, whose 2011 hit Bloody Mary became inseparable from the character’s viral dance trend. Another one is Christopher Lloyd, who will also guest star in an undisclosed role. The actor played Uncle Fester in the older Addams Family movies. Interestingly, this makes him the second actor from the films to appear in the series after Christina Ricci last season.

Wednesday Season 2 Can Fix Some Problems

Bringing Back the Original Addams Family Feel

The Addams family

One major criticism of Wednesday season 1 is that it strayed too far from the original Addams Family movies and TV shows. Instead of a true adaptation, it felt more like a reimagining of the characters and elements within Tim Burton’s world. While the Addams family’s presence was visually felt in the first season, their personalities felt off. Furthermore, the suspenseful murder mystery approach worked, but the heavy focus on supernatural and magical powers felt like a major departure from canon.

Wednesday season 2 could fix this by returning to the original Addams Family vibe: eerie and odd, but not overly powerful. In past versions, their spookiness felt more implied, with any supernatural elements remaining subtle and beneath the surface. However, the Netflix series, much like their recent animated adaptations, lean heavily into the supernatural. Returning to this approach could help Wednesday Season 2 be more than just one of Netflix’s most-watched shows. It could become a true classic, worthy of standing alongside other Addams Family stories.
