  • This includes a Revenant skater that recreates the iconic ‘Doot’ meme from 2011.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is using a meme that rose to prominence 14 years ago to draw a wave of old-school support for the upcoming title. While Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is already stirring up nostalgia from longtime fans, the revival of the popular Doom Doot meme seems to be reaching out to an even broader part of its fan base.

Although news regarding the remake of the two classic skateboarding games was already leaked in late February, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 was officially revealed on March 4, 2025, through a trailer that showcases its classic tricks and skate parks with visuals that meet the standards of the current generation of consoles and gaming PCs. Neversoft developed the original games, which were released in 2001 and 2002, respectively, but the development of the remakes was handed off to Iron Galaxy, perhaps best known up to this point as the studio behind the second and third seasons of content for the 2013 version of fighting game Killer Instinct.

While many longtime fans of the series are excited to see the classic skateboarding games being revived, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is bringing along with it a couple of characters from another even older game: id Software’s 1993 first-person shooter Doom. A second trailer for the upcoming game shows off its Digital Deluxe version’s pre-order rewards, which include the boomer shooter protagonist, Doom Slayer, and Revenant, an enemy type that was introduced in Doom 2. Both of these playable crossover characters are stepping out of their element and into the game’s skate parks for the remake, but the developers have added a special feature for Revenant, drawing on the old Doom Doot meme by letting him blast out a short note from a trumpet in the middle of displaying tricks.

For those who weren’t busy trolling memes in 2011, the reference may need a bit of backstory to understand. Doot Doot is the name the Internet has collectively given to a low-resolution GIF of a skull playing a trumpet that was originally created in 1999. However, it didn’t really gain popularity until 2011, when it started appearing repeatedly on message boards for Call of Duty and various communities on Steam. Several variations arose not long after, including Doom Doot, which has a Revenant filling in for the original low-res skull. Other gaming companies have used the throwback meme to entertain players in the past, including Xbox’s Halo ODST DOOTS video from 2021, which featured the skull playing along on trumpet to the game’s theme song.

In addition to the two bonus skaters, the Digital Deluxe Edition also includes multiple skate decks, Create-a-Skater apparel, bonus in-game music, and an Unmaykr Hoverboard, as well as three days of early access. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is set to release on July 11, so there are likely to be more reveals of its gameplay before its launch.
