Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 is about to bring back some of the best games from the entire series, and it’s poised to be quite the nostalgic blast from the past. I still fondly remember gliding around THPS 4’s College level, exploring the parking lot, and making my way onto the rooftops at my own pace. That said, there’s been some confusion as to whether or not the 3+4 remake will work the same way – based on Activision’s announcement, it seems possible that, rather than open ended, the new THPS 4 will have the two-minute time limit structure of the older games.
Back in 2002, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4 changed the series’ Career Mode. There was no time limit. You could explore the skateboard game’s levels at leisure, picking up missions from NPCs. In previous games, you’d have two-minute stints to complete any number of a level’s objectives, with any finished in that time committed to the game’s memory before you can try the others. This is how THPS 1+2 works, and since the reveal of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4, there’s been immense confusion on whether or not 4’s revamped career system is back for the remake.
Across many of the game’s announcement blogs and store pages, players are bewildered by one statement: “Skate the original parks from THPS3 and THPS4 remade in 4K resolution and given streamlined goals in the two-minute format along with some new parks to expand your skating options.”

This, as you might expect, has led to a state of uncertainty. Will the revamped and more freeform version of THPS 4’s Career Mode be replaced with the 2-minute timers for the sake of consistency? It’s hard to tell. Meanwhile, the Activision FAQ page for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3+4 says “everything from the original games will return for this remake.”
Right now, it’s incredibly difficult to know if we’ll be getting THPS4 in its original form or with some changes to Career Mode. Even the THPS subreddit is in complete shambles. That’s why we’ve reached out to Activision to get clarification, and will update this story if or when we get a response. In the meantime, THPS 3+4 is already looking incredibly stacked, and filled with the same tight controls that the 1+2 remake brought to the table.
