A lot of gamers got a big surprise last month when an official remaster of Days Gone was announced. Over the years, the game has become a cult classic, and many have been hoping for a Days Gone follow-up. A remaster may not be as exciting as a full-blown sequel, but it could potentially lead to one. However, Days Gone isn’t the only high-profile zombie game set to make waves in 2025, as there are a lot of in-development titles potentially launching this year.
Zombies and gaming are a team-up that spans decades now. Despite the oversaturation of the genre, zombie-focused games continue to be great ways to tell compelling and unique stories. If the roster of in-development zombie projects crawls out of the shadows this year, fans of the genre are in for a great time.

These two zombie heavy-hitters are primed to start the year off strong for the genre. While the launch of remasters isn’t as thrilling as brand-new games, these two releases serve as some strong appetizers for what the rest of the year may have in store. Days Gone Remastered and The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered are launching quite close to one another, which may cause some competition between the two, but a double dose of zombie storytelling could also prove to be a lot of fun.
Dying Light: The Beast and John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando Have Yet to Reveal a Release Date
Last year’s announcement of Dying Light: The Beast was exciting for many fans of the series, as it marks the long-awaited return of Kyle Crane. As of now, developer Techland has yet to confirm a release date, but a target of summer 2025 is expected. Even more secretive, though, is John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando. The trailer for the game teases a fun, B-action movie-style approach to the genre, but now that it’s passed its original 2024 target, it could be eyeing this year for its release.
The original Dying Light was released in 2015. With 2025 marking the 10th anniversary of the franchise, it would make perfect sense for Dying Light: The Beast to debut this year.
State of Decay 3 Continues a Beloved Franchise
Fans of this series have been waiting for State of Decay 3 for a long time now. The last chapter was launched back in 2018, and with the third entry first being announced at the 2020 Xbox Games Showcase, many have been eager to get an official launch date. State of Decay 3 has high expectations to meet, but finally getting a release date set in stone would make a lot of gamers happy.
Past rumors have suggested that State of Decay 3 may have been pushed back to 2026, but this has yet to be confirmed.
A Rumored Sequel Could Be Revealed
- Back 4 Blood 2 is suspected to be in development.
Of course, this has yet to be officially confirmed, but there is a lot of evidence pointing to a potential Back 4 Blood sequel. It may be unlikely that such a follow-up will launch this year, but it’s far more possible that it could be announced at an upcoming gaming event.
The Zombie Genre Continues to Thrive
It appears as though there is no stopping zombie fever from spreading in gaming. Other upcoming games, like Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days, Showa American Story, and Killing Floor 3 are set to be released soon, too. No matter how many zombie games are made, there always seems to be an exciting new angle for developers to take with the genre.
