Manga Debut

Chapter 18, “Bottom”

Anime Debut

Episode 8, “Boring”

Jujutsu Kaisen is filled with interesting characters, each with a unique personality. However, not all the characters in the series get the spotlight that they deserve and one such character is Kasumi Miwa. The second-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High has very few scenes in the whole anime and she more or less just serves as comedic relief.

Many people fail to recognize the potential she holds as she is shown to be extremely hardworking and wants to become a great sorcerer. It is true that Miwa didn’t contribute much to the major fights in Jujutsu Kaisen but that doesn’t make her entirely useless. If only her abilities were utilized as they should have been, she would undoubtedly have been one of the most popular female characters in Jujutsu Kaisen.

The Hidden Potential Of Kasumi Miwa

Who Is Miwa?

Jujutsu Kaisen Kasumi Miwa On Phone

Kasumi Miwa is perhaps the most sanest among her peers, and she uses the New Shadow Style in battles. She is also a big fan of Gojo Satoru and is considered one of the cutest characters in Jujutsu Kaisen due to her bubbly personality. Since she comes from a pretty poor background, she is determined to work hard enough to become a good sorcerer to provide a good life for her younger brothers, making Miwa a great inspiration for many.

I’m just a poor, incompetent, sword-wielding girl! – Kasumi Miwa

Whilel, she is pretty determined, she lacks self-esteem and thinks of herself as useless and only a burden to others. However, she is extremely kind-hearted and much more reasonable than others in Kyoto Jujutsu High. This is why she didn’t want to participate in Principal Gakuganji’s plan to assassinate Yuji during the goodwill event.

How Strong Is Miwa?

When the Kyoto Goodwill Event commences, Miwa finds herself against Maki Zenin, who, while not blessed with cursed energy, is as menacing and powerful as some of the best sorcerers. So, of course, she ends up being outpowered by Maki, which in a way, gives viewers the idea that perhaps Kasumi Miwa is a lot weaker than her peers to lose to a sorcerer with no cursed energy.

She may not possess a powerful cursed technique, but she makes up for it with exceptional swordsmanship. Miwa is one of the very few sorcerers who rely on swordsmanship. She uses her New Shadow Style technique, and its true power can be seen during the Night Parade of 100 Demons. Kasumi Miwa is also able to create a Simple Domain which creates a small barrier that allows the user to protect themselves from incoming attacks or deal devastating blows to anyone who enters the domain.

She can also use the Batto Sword Drawing technique to fuse her sword with cursed energy, greatly amplifying its damage-dealing abilities. Miwa is seen displaying this technique against Kenjaku, but he was fast enough to dodge it.

The Future Of Kasumi Miwa

It would be safe to say that Jujutsu Kaisen completely ignored her growth as her character, which failed to show us Miwa at her max potential. As soon as the Kyoto Goodwill event is finished, her role in the series becomes less and less prominent. The most memorable moment we got with Miwa was when Mechamaru was killed. This would have been a great chance for Jujutsu Kaisen to show how the death of her potential love interest pushes her forward to improve in her sorcery.

I want to get closer to you. So one day, I will visit you – Miwa Kasumi

But instead, she gets overshadowed by other characters as the episodes move forward and we rarely see her after. Hopefully, the anime gives a little more love to Kasumi Miwa than the manga did as with enough training and maybe a battle that gives her a power-up, Miwa has a lot of potential to become a standout sorcerer.
