Joe and Anthony want to do better in their next Avengers movies. Speaking about the anticipated MCU tentpole with GamesRadar, Joe said: “Absolutely, we want to beat those younger versions of ourselves. We have to be, right? Because we have to outdo those movies in a way, or we at least have to take you on an equally engaging journey.” Anthony has the same goal as his sibling, even taking their MCU return as an “incredible opportunity.” Anthony said:
These movies are an incredible opportunity for us, and they’re an incredible opportunity for audiences. So we’re doing what we can to deliver the experience everyone, I think, hopes for.
In another interview with The Playlist, the Russos explained what convinced them to return to doing Avengers. Apparently, they were looking at the “storyline” and they loved what they created. “So we’re exclusively focused on the storytelling right now,” Joe explained. “And that’s the thing that brought us back – an idea for a story where we went, ‘That’s a really, really interesting story to tell.'” According to Joe, they are now concentrating on bringing those ideas to life. As for being pressured since there are high expectations from them due to the massive success of the previous Avengers movies they helmed, the Russos want to stay calm because they work best in that state. “Pressure and fear usually make for very poor decision-making,” Joe said.
The Russo brothers are skilled and talented, and this is evident in their works. Also, their last Avengers movies, Endgame, was released six years ago. At this point, Joe and Anthony are more experienced in their craft after delivering the biggest MCU movies. Additionally, they are very much involved in the storytelling in the MCU films, so it only makes sense that they helm the next movies.
The Russos love the MCU comics; they can be considered Marvel nerds. Joe previously told Deadline that one of the series they loved growing up was Secret Wars and he acknowledged that it was bigger than Infinity War and Endgame even noting that it’s “incredibly ambitious” and a “massive undertaking.” So, the pair is fully aware of what they are doing and has clear directions of where they are heading. The Russos are great at what they do and will surely not disappoint fans.
Avengers: Doomsday hit theaters on May 1, 2026, while Avengers: Secret Wars will be released on May 7, 2027.
