The Electric State is Getting Its Own Video Game

Streaming giant Netflix has announced that its upcoming science-fiction film The Electric State will receive its own video game adaptation, expanding the movie’s setting and story. Starring actors Chris Pratt and Millie Bobby Brown, The Electric State will debut on March 14, 2025, via Netflix, with the game set to launch on mobile platforms some time afterward.

With rival media companies like Disney, Paramount, and Warner Brothers all operating competing streaming services, Netflix risks losing the ability to attract customers by carrying those companies’ back catalogs and films. With that in mind, the company has turned to games in recent years, offering subscribers free access to a selection of games. Some of the best Netflix games include popular licensed titles like World of Goo Remastered and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Definitive Edition, and even exclusive spin-offs like Rainbow Six: SMOL, a cutesy tactical game based on hit FPS Rainbow Six: Siege. Netflix Games even directly publishes its own titles, based on Netflix productions like Stranger Things.

According to a report from Variety, the newest addition to the Netflix Games slate will be The Electric State: Kid Cosmo, a new exclusive mobile title directly tied to the film. The report says that The Electric State: Kid Cosmo will function as a “narrative-driven” prequel to The Electric State main film, taking place before the film’s timeline and spanning a period of five years. The official Netflix Games YouTube account also uploaded a trailer for Kid Cosmo that outlines the game’s place in the film’s universe and hints at its gameplay.

The Electric State Mobile Game Prequel Set to Release After the Film on Netflix

The official trailer for The Electric State: Kid Cosmo shows what looks to be a blend of narrative-game visuals and retro-styled gameplay inspired by classic console and arcade titles. Kid Cosmo takes place some time before the war between robots and humans that defines The Electric State‘s backstory. There, a pair of children in Kansas receive a video game based on Kid Cosmo, played on a fictional handheld called a Sensoft. Players will play the Kid Cosmo game, while experiencing narrative-driven scenes showing how the world changes around them. The game’s narrative visuals consist of evocative 2D art featuring haunting landscapes and giant robots, not unlike the illustrations of Swedish artist Simon Stålenhag, who created the story The Electric State film is based on.

Reaction to the announcement of The Electric State: Kid Cosmos was generally positive. Commenters on Twitter and Bluesky mentioned enjoying games via Netflix, and expressed hope that the production of a tie-in to The Electric State could mean a revival of the canceled Stranger Things game projects of previous years. Licensed games have grown rarer in recent years, and the positive reception to a potential Electric State-based tie-in game seems to indicate that there’s an appetite for more “transmedia” projects out there.
