That’s not stopped somebody at Sony from keeping an eye on things, though, with the console receiving its first new update, version 4.92, in over a year.

The last PlayStation 3 update took place almost exactly a year ago, on February 27, 2024. It was given the classic patch notes that stated, “This system software update improves system performance,” keeping things nice and vague, with nobody knowing what had exactly changed.

Today, the console received a new update to firmware version 4.92, with Sony once again stating, “This system software update improves system performance,” however, the company revealed a little more this time.

Requiring a whopping 200MB of free space on the console, Sony says, “Please note, to play Blu-ray discs, your PS3 system needs a renewed Blu-ray player encryption key. Please update your PS3 system software to the latest version to renew the Blu-ray player encryption key.“

Effectively, if you don’t update your PlayStation 3 to this version of the software, you’ll no longer be able to play and watch Blu-rays on the console.

At this point in time, you have to imagine that most PS3’s are nothing more than glorified Blu-ray players. Sure, some people will still boot it up from time to time to get their Dark Souls kicks or play through one of the fantastic games that are still trapped on the console, but you have to imagine those people are few and far between.

As they probably would, Sony recommends you “always update your PS3 system to the latest version of the system software,” and by doing so, “you can enjoy additional features, improved usability, and enhanced security.”

Long live the PlayStation 3.
