Nu Udras are the same species as The Black Flame, a story-related monster you’ll fight in Monster Hunter Wilds. These large creatures not only have a lot of arms to attack you with but also can imbue themselves with fire to deal devastating AOE fire damage.
Even if some of the earlier monsters in the game have been fairly easy for you, Nu Udras can be a bit of a speed bump, and it’s highly recommended you make some changes when trying to face one. Here’s everything you need to know about Nu Udras, including how to take them down.

New players must avoid mistakes in Monster Hunter Wilds, and these tips are essential for those venturing into the Forbidden Lands.
How To Prepare To Fight A Nu Udra In Monster Hunter Wilds
The first step in getting ready to face a Nu Udra is to focus on fire resistance and have a weapon that deals water damage. If you’ve already beaten the Black Flame and this isn’t your first Nu Udra, use whatever you got from the first one to craft gear as it will have some of the best fire resistance. If this is your first Nu Udra, here is the best armor for fire resistance up until chapter 2 in the game when you have to fight The Black Flame.
Ajarakans are also found in the Oilwell Basin and were introduced right before The Black Flame, so they can be easily hunted to get their gear. For the Talisman, you can choose to either focus more on fire resistance or get a boost to another offensive stat for your build. For your weapon, it’s ideal to pick something that deals water damage, and anything crafted from Uth Dunas materials will have that.
It’s also highly recommended you cook and eat a meal with veggies as the base to get additional elemental resistance.
Where To Find Nu Udras In Monster Hunter Wilds
After you find The Black Flame during the main story, Nu Udras will start appearing in Oilwell Basin in a few areas:
- Area 8
- Area 9
- Area 10
- Area 15
- Area 17
Instead of trying to find one randomly, you can also talk to Alma and begin an optional quest to hunt one down. This will make sure one spawns and fast travel you to Oilwell Basin with the monster already marked on your map and the scout flies tracking it.

How To Beat A Nu Udra In Monster Hunter Wilds
Nu Udras are weak to Water damage and are resistant to Fire damage.
Nu Udras has two forms, and a lot of the attacks it uses at a time will be based on the form it is in. One form is its usual form with it looking normal, and the other will be when it’s on fire. The weak points of a Nu Udra are:
- The large head usually hanging off the back of its body.
- The mouth, normally right on the ground in front of it.
- The heads of each tentacle where the teeth are and the color slightly changes.
Base Form Attacks & Strategy
In its base form, it won’t use fire and instead will focus on physical damage, usually attacking with its tentacles. Most of its attacks are forward-facing attacks, having it lunge forward and cover a large area. Whenever you’re dodging, be sure to dodge to the sides. You’ll want to fight at a mid-range, as hitting the heads of the tentacles is your best bet. Nu Udras also have a grab attack, though as long as you start stabbing with your knife right away, it will drop you before you take any real damage.
Try targeting limbs that aren’t its front two by the mouth, as those will be used in just about any attack and you won’t get as many hits in. It does have a spin move it will use often when fighting from this distance, but when you see it curl up dodge away as the area of effect for this attack is fairly small. Continue to focus on the tentacles and try to wound and break them, as that will cut off the head of the tentacle and slightly decrease the range of its attacks.
Fire Form Attacks & Strategy
After you deal some damage and anger the monster, its entire body will catch on fire. During this phase, everything above still applies, it just has a lot more fire-based moves. Simply being too close to the monster in this form will slowly damage you, and all attacks will deal more damage thanks to the added fire element. The one you want to look for is when it spits fire from its mouth. The animation is long and it won’t move, so once you’re out of the area of effect you’ll have a few seconds to attack before it finishes its animation.
It also has a rock-throwing attack that it will use if you move too far away, so when you heal don’t run too far. Whenever it starts shaking all over, look up and get ready to dodge as it will launch a dozen large flaming rocks into the air that will come raining down, though it only rarely uses this attack when it’s on its last legs. You can also find and use Watermoss Slinger ammo to try and put out the flames, making it revert to its base form and be less deadly.
