Summary

  • Nancy and Jonathan need stronger storylines in Stranger Things season 5 for a more impactful conclusion.
  • Fans anticipate a love triangle resolution between Nancy, Jonathan, and Steve in the upcoming season.
  • Jonathan and Nancy should come together for an exciting and moving storyline in the final season.

Netflix‘s Stranger Things season 4 had some epic scenes, such as Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) saving Jim Hopper (David Harbour) from a shocking and haunting captivity. But, as is the case with every season of the hit series, fans also enjoy smaller moments between main and minor characters. Some of the best parts of the previous season involved the funny and charming dynamic between newcomer Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) and Dustin Henderson (Gaten Matarazzo). But even though it would be great to see those two having fun together again, Eddie shouldn’t return, and the fifth and final season needs to focus on wrapping up everyone’s arcs.

When Stranger Things season 5 arrives on Netflix in 2025, fans expect Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to face Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). There will definitely be a mix of big and small moments. However, two characters in particular need strong storylines: Nancy Wheeler (Natalia Dyer) and Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton), who have been a couple for a while.

Stranger Things season 5 is coming in 2025, and after watching the conclusion to this epic story, fans are curious what the spinoff could be like.

Stranger Things Season 5 Should Feature A Meaningful Nancy/Jonathan Storyline

Many fans have pointed out that the main characters spend Stranger Things season 4 apart, and that’s also true of long-time couple Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers. Nancy and Jonathan spend most of the season on their own and that needs to change in the fifth and final season. Hopefully, Stranger Things season 5 will give Nancy and Jonathan their own meaningful stories but also have their plotlines intertwined.

Nancy has a fairly interesting arc in Stranger Things season 4. She becomes close friends with Robin Buckley (Maya Hawke), who is a character who shines in the fourth season. It’s fun to watch them talk to Victor Creel (Robert Englund) at Pennhurst Asylum and try to get some answers. The fact that the actor who played Freddy Krueger in the A Nightmare On Elm Street franchise played this creepy character added another cool layer. But while it’s great to see Nancy becoming more secure and leaning into her ambition, fans see very little of Nancy and Jonathan’s relationship. Although they’re still a couple by the end of Stranger Things season 4, it’s hard to even remember what scenes they’re in together. It’s also hard to recall what happens to Jonathan in the fourth season.

Even Charlie Heaton commented on what fans have said about his character. In a 2022 interview with British GQ, he said he has read viewers’ opinions that Jonathan hasn’t had much to do in recent seasons. Heaton said:

“‘What happened to the character?’ It is an ensemble cast, obviously every season they’ve brought in new characters, wonderful characters, and they’ve taken the story to different places.”

Stranger Things season 5 should put Jonathan in the limelight. Perhaps he can team up with a character who he hasn’t spent a lot of time with in the past, like Eleven. Fans want unique character duos in the fifth season, as this would be a moving way to wrap up the story. It would also be great to see Nancy and Robin investigating a mystery again. But after Jonathan and Nancy are shown separately, they should come together for an exciting and moving storyline. Maybe Jonathan gets stuck in the Upside Down and Nancy saves him, which would show how strong, powerful, and clever Nancy is.

Should There Be A Love Triangle In Stranger Things Season 5?

Nancy Wheeler in Stranger Things

While thinking about Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers’s Stranger Things season 5’s plotline, it’s hard to imagine that the final episodes won’t continue the Nancy/Jonathan/Steve Harrington love triangle from previous seasons. On the one hand, viewers have strong opinions about whether Nancy should end up with Jonathan or Steve. It would be fun to see Nancy choose between them, once and for all. However, on the other hand, it would make sense if Nancy is single at the end of the series.

When asked about Nancy’s Stranger Things season 4 romantic life in an interview with Netflix.tudum.com, Natalia Dyer commented on the love triangle and said:

“There’s a lot of things going on, and I don’t know if that sort of high school romance thing is as important as everything else. These are people, again, who all really care about each other and have a shared experience. But, yeah, I think there are things about both Steve and Jonathan that Nancy really likes.”

It’s definitely true that Nancy is an intelligent and ambitious character with a bright future ahead, and she should be thinking about more than just her dating life. But when fans think about where the main Stranger Things characters will end up, it would be a shame not to learn if Nancy and Jonathan make it until the final scene, if Nancy realizes her feelings for Steve, or if she goes off on her own.
