Mario Kart Players Tasked With Completing One Million Laps For Mario Day

Summary

  • Nintendo is holding a Mario Kart Community Challenge to celebrate Mario Day.
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe players will need to complete one million laps between March 7 and March 17, 2025.
  • If the challenge is beaten, everyone who participated will receive 310 Platinum Points.

Mario Day is coming up and despite this year being the 40th anniversary of the original release of Super Mario Bros, if Nintendo has anything big planned, it’s currently keeping it under wraps. We do know one way it plans to celebrate though – by tasking Mario Kart 8 Deluxe players with completing one million laps over ten days.

Dubbed the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Community Challenge, Nintendo has revealed what it will be expecting of you, and what you will need to do to complete the challenge, on its website. Starting from 3 am EST on March 7, 2025, players will have exactly ten days to cumulatively complete one million laps in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Nothing ruins the joy of grabbing an Item Box quite like a Blooper.

Before you start planning your attack, there are a few things you need to know. First of all, only laps completed in the tournament created specifically for this event will count towards the total. Once the community challenge is live, you will need to head to the game’s Tournaments’ tab and enter the code 1152-2501-4827. That will put you in races against others online, and any laps you complete will keep the lap counter ticking up.

That also means you will need to be a Nintendo Switch Online subscriber if you want to take part, but even those of you who don’t have NSO are invited. Nintendo is offering up a 14-day free trial so that anyone who owns a copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe can take part and contribute. The free trial offer will only be live while the Community Challenge is live and must be claimed by March 17, 2025.

Nintendo isn’t asking you to race one million laps purely for the fun of it, although it will be a lot of fun. If we all manage to hit that lofty goal, then we’ll receive 310 Platinum Points for doing so. Why 310? Because Mario Day is March 10. The tenth day of the third month. Get it yet?

Platinum Points can be exchanged for all sorts, including physical goodies, and Nintendo has added a couple of new items to the prize pool in preparation for many of us hopefully becoming 310 points richer later this month. A transparent Super Mario bag is now available along with a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe license holder lanyard. Very nice, but I’ve still got my eye on that DK barrel pen holder.
