Marathon’s Preorder Bonuses Discovered on Steam

Marathon's Preorder Bonuses Discovered on Steam

Summary

  • Marathon preorder bonuses have appeared on Steam, prompting some fans to wonder if Bungie is preparing to reveal more about the FPS.
  • One of these bonuses is reportedly a Destiny crossover, giving the purchaser access to free Marathon skins that are usable in Destiny 2.
  • Speculation suggests Bungie may make a Marathon reveal in April or during the June Summer Game Fest showcase.

Bungie fans have spotted Marathon preorder bonuses on the popular PC storefront Steam. A reboot of Bungie’s 1994 FPS of the same name, Marathon was first revealed in May 2023 and, to the disappointment of many Bungie and Sony fans, hasn’t been shown off ever since. The game was announced with a stunning cinematic action trailer sporting a slick sci-fi aesthetic, but fans have been left wondering when they’ll learn more about the reboot.

Although little else has officially come out about Marathon since its initial reveal, there have been some small updates and leaks here and there over the past year. Last March, Marathon‘s director Christopher Barrett was fired from Bungie due to workplace misconduct. In September, a report claimed that Marathon was targeting a smaller $40 price point, causing concern for the live-service multiplayer shooter in a climate where the free-to-play multiplayer model has become the norm. The failure of the $40 multiplayer game Concord around the same time only added to fans’ worries. Most recently, Marathon‘s new Director, Joe Ziegler, gave a 10-minute developer update in October 2024, providing some insight into the game’s PvP and PvE modes and setting players’ expectations for another update in mid-2025.

Bungie’s Marathon is Teed Up for a Huge 2025

While its release date may not be as early as fans were hoping for, 2025 is still expected to be a big year for Bungie’s Marathon reboot.

In the early part of 2025, it seems Bungie may be quietly gearing up for a big Marathon update at some point soon. Some members of the SteamDB Discord server and the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit have noticed some Marathon preorder bonuses that have appeared on Steam. One of these goodies is reportedly a Destiny crossover, giving the purchaser access to free Marathon skins that are usable in Destiny 2. This seems to imply that Marathon will likely launch with different editions available to preorder, each with their own in-game bonuses.

Marathon Preorder Bonuses Appear on Steam

While this may vary from developer to developer, uploading preorder information to Steam could be considered one of the last things a game studio does in preparation for launching a game. Last month, in response to gamers’ disappointment over the Marathon-shaped hole in Sony’s February State of Play, industry insider Jeff Grubb mentioned that Bungie usually does its own thing separate from PlayStation’s showcases and events. Grubb added that Marathon was absent from the State of Play because he believed Bungie was preparing to do something for Marathon in April. With this in mind, and considering the preorder bonuses that were just discovered on Steam, next month’s potential Marathon showing could be bigger than anticipated.

It’s important to remember that all this is mere rumor and speculation, as Bungie hasn’t given any official word on any sort of Marathon event happening in April. Fans may have to wait until closer to the middle of the year, as Joe Ziegler stated, to be able to learn more about Marathon, perhaps during Geoff Keighley’s June Summer Game Fest showcase. Whether it be next month or in June, it seems Bungie may be preparing to finally begin the full rollout of Marathon, but fans will just need to wait and see.
