Summary
- Vegeta’s quest to surpass Goku resonates with fans, despite Toriyama not liking his character.
- Super Saiyan God form was introduced in “Battle of the Gods” and is base form of God mode.
- Vegeta surpasses Goku in Super Saiyan God form, achieves Ultra Ego form in manga with potential for anime adaptation.
Although Goku is the main protagonist and hero of Dragon Ball, a large portion of the franchise’s fanbase have preferred his counterpart, the Saiyan Prince, Vegeta. Despite always being the number-two Saiyan of the group, Vegeta’s quest to become the most powerful fighter of his race resonates with many Dragon Ball fans. Weirdly enough, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama admits to never liking Vegeta as a character.
Vegeta did concede the crown of strongest Saiyan towards the end of the Majin Buu saga, but that hasn’t stopped him from aspiring to not only catch Goku, but surpass him. He may never be the story’s main hero, but Vegeta will stop at nothing to become better than his Saiyan rival. One may point to his Ultra Ego form as a good example of this, but a far better one is his rise to becoming a Super Saiyan God.

What Is The Super Saiyan God Form?
Going Beyond the Limit of the Super Saiyan
- Super Saiyan God was first introduced in the manga and film, titled “Battle of the Gods”.
- Super Saiyan God is the base form of the God mode.
- Super Saiyan Blue is the Super Saiyan form of the Super Saiyan God mode.
- Super Saiyan God was re-introduced during Episode 9 of Dragon Ball Super, titled “Thanks for Waiting, Lord Beerus! A Super Saiyan God Is Born at Last!”
During the Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Gods film and manga, Goku and his friends are facing the potential erasure of Earth by the hands of Universe 7’s God of Destruction, Beerus. Any attempt to best him in battle is shrugged off, leaving Goku to fulfill a prophecy Beerus had of a warrior with the power of a God giving him the challenge he was seeking. The only problem was, nobody knew how to perform the act of becoming a God. That was, until Shenron gave the stipulation.
Five Saiyans with pure hearts to infuse their power into another was the ritual, and thanks to some help from Videl and her in utero, a quarter-Saiyan child, Goku had five Saiyans ready to turn him into the Super Saiyan God. After performing the ritual, the Super Saiyan God form was born, turning Goku’s hair red and giving him a significant power boost and a younger look to go with it.
When Does Vegeta Unlock the Super Saiyan God Form?
And When He First Uses It
Ironically enough, Vegeta’s base Super Saiyan God form isn’t revealed in the Battle of the Gods movie, nor in the anime. However, the first glimpses we get in the manga come in Chapter 22 of the Dragon Ball Super manga, as Vegeta brings it out during his fight against Goku Black. The change to this form turns the tables on Goku Black, giving the edge to Vegeta and also adding a boost to confidence.
That’s right. You had no idea, did you? I’ve been a Super Saiyan for years and now, I too, have the power of a God.
Vegeta also uses this form for the first time in an anime feature during the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film, stunning fans with a beautiful 360 shot and turning his hair from golden yellow to a fiery red. The quick changes in form allow Vegeta to temporarily gain the upper hand on Broly, but this is short-lived, forcing Vegeta to quickly switch from the base Super Saiyan God form to the Super Saiyan blue upgrade.
Of course, Vegeta’s chances of winning a battle on his own remain slim to none, even with the new additions of Saiyan forms. Despite always getting the upper hand in battles, Vegeta’s ego will forever get in his own way.
How Strong is Vegeta in Super Saiyan God Form?
During the Dragon Ball Super anime run, fans are first introduced to Goku earning the Super Saiyan God form, and as a result, the Super Saiyan Blue form, before Vegeta achieves it. Vegeta reveals the form before a fight against Golden Frieza, shortly after defeating Goku. Unbeknownst to Frieza, Vegeta had been training with Beerus and Whis, mastering the form and perfecting it to the point of being able to maintain the form and avoid wasting stamina.
Going toe-to-toe, we immediately discover just how much Vegeta has surpassed Goku in the Super Saiyan God form. A fight with Frieza that left Goku near death, Vegeta spent the majority of his battle against the galactic emperor pummeling his opponent. In an embarrassing showcase of power, Vegeta didn’t allow any type of offense from Vegeta, while taking out his frustrations on the one who once ruled his people.
Despite Toriyama’s disdain for the character, Vegeta has received his fair share of brilliant moments that make him look unstoppable. Sure, Goku remains the go-to character to deliver the final blow, but Vegeta’s ability to keep rising to the occasion and learn new forms hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Can Vegeta Go Past the Limits of a Super Saiyan God?
The answer is yes! Not only has Vegeta already surpassed the Super Saiyan God Super Saiyan Blue form, he’s done it twice. While the anime has only featured one of these upgrades so far, the manga has introduced a brand-new form that rivals Goku’s Ultra Instinct.
In the Tournament of Power, Vegeta once again surpasses his limits, discovering an awakened form of Super Saiyan Blue. With his new shade of blue hair and an enhanced physique, Vegeta’s boost in strength is enough to give him the edge in a battle against Toppo, shortly after becoming a God of Destruction. A power at the level of a God of Destruction may have been just what inspired his eventual rise to harness the power of one himself.
In the manga, Vegeta’s continuous training with Beerus has earned him the power of a God of Destruction, achieving the Ultra Ego form. Donning a purple hue to his hair, a lack of eyebrows, and a sinister appearance akin to his Majin Vegeta look, the Ultra Ego form was born. Hopefully, one day, this form will be adapted for an anime series, as it is already a fan favorite among manga readers.
