Fans of trading card games probably won’t find this surprising, but if Pokemon TCG Pocket is your first dive into the trading card game world, the idea of promotional (promo) cards might be new to you. These cards usually have a time-based release or event that allows you to claim cards with different artwork or ones that aren’t in packs you can open.

It can be tricky, knowing every promo card you can get, how to obtain it, and how long it will be available. This guide does some of that work for you. So while you may need to win some battles, you’ll at least know what you’re aiming for.
There is an ever-growing list of promotional cards in Pokemon Pocket. Instead of going to your local hobby shop or partnered store, you acquire these through playing the game. These cards can not be obtained by opening up the card packs you unlock daily. They are available through other means, which will be detailed below.
Many of these cards are linked to timed events and may not currently be available.
Basic Pokemon cards can be played immediately; they don’t need to evolve from previous cards.

There are a few different methods of collecting these promotional Pokemon cards. After all, if you’re new to the game, what the heck is a Drop event? This section will go over the different ways to ensure you don’t miss a single card.
Participate In Events
Many of the cards are locked behind events that you have to participate in, or more accurately, battle through. During Drop events, players will be invited to battle AI opponents in solo battles, ranging from Beginner to Expert difficulty. If you win, you have a chance to be gifted a Promo Pack, which contains a single promotional card.
Purchase Them
Many of the basic Item cards can be purchased from the shop with in-game tickets you can earn in a variety of ways. They cost two tickets each. Other cards are linked to the Premium subscription you can pay for, such as the Pikachu, which is stylized as a one-star card.
Promotional cards don’t have a rarity assigned to them like all the cards you pull from the in-game sets. However, many are designed to reflect the rarity of other cards, thanks to the borders of the card.
Wonder Picks
While still classified as an event, there are Chansey Picks that will pop up in your Wonder Picks. These are typically two promotional cards and some in-game items, like Hourglasses, which can let you refill your Wonder Pick. Unfortunately, this means you have to pick the right card out of five choices, but you will usually end up with at least a couple of each promo card by the time Chansey takes away these special picks.
Currently, you can not trade promotional cards with other players. Trading has several restrictions applied to it, and one of those is that promo cards are not eligible for trading.
