Thanks to the recent launch of its Enhanced edition, Grand Theft Auto 5 has entered Steam’s top ten most played games twice, a feat not accomplished by another title before. Grand Theft Auto 5 players on PC were recently treated to a massive new update that brought a plethora of graphical improvements to the twelve-year-old title, but the big upgrade also separated the title into a Legacy and Enhanced version.
On February 20, publisher and developer Rockstar Games announced that the long-awaited Expanded and Enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto 5 would be coming to PC on March 4. The update was initially released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S back in 2022, bringing exclusive content and technical improvements to the game’s console version. Although PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S owners needed to pay for the upgrade, even if they owned Grand Theft Auto 5 on last gen consoles, PC players have received the update for free if they own what is now known as Grand Theft Auto 5 Legacy.

Despite mostly silence from developer Rockstar, fans have a new theory as to when the studio may drop the second official Grand Theft Auto 6 trailer.
GTA 5 Is in Steam’s Top 10 Most Played Games Twice
Those who wish to stay on the previous version of Grand Theft Auto 5 can still boot up the Legacy edition, while those looking for a shiny new upgrade can jump into the Enhanced version. Due to the separation, Grand Theft Auto 5 has broken yet another record, this time on Steam. According to SteamDB, an online database used to track numerous different elements of Steam games, Grand Theft Auto 5 is now in the top ten most played games not once but twice. As seen in the image below, Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced has over 152,000 concurrent players, making it the seventh most played game on Steam as of writing. The older version of the game, Grand Theft Auto 5 Legacy, is still boasting impressive numbers, coming in at the number ten position with over 113,000 concurrent players.
Although it is currently ranking higher in terms of concurrent players, the Enhanced version of Grand Theft Auto 5 still has some ways to go to beat the original in terms of all-time player peak on Steam. Almost ten years ago, on April 19, 2015, Grand Theft Auto 5 peaked at over 364,000 concurrent players, which puts it as the thirty-second game in terms of highest all-time peaks. As for Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, the upgraded version peaked at just over 187,000 concurrent players on the same day of its release, March 4. However, with the weekend approaching there’s a strong chance it could break that record.
Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced might be off to a great start on Steam, but it hasn’t been all sunshine and roses. As part of the update’s release, players who upgraded to the Enhanced edition could claim a free car in Grand Theft Auto Online. Unfortunately, players were left baffled after redeeming the vehicle, only to be charged almost 2,000,000 GTA$. It’s unclear why this is happening, but Rockstar does appear to be refunding players who reach out to its support team.
