Elden Ring Nightreign was one of the most surprising reveals of last year, as many were not expecting Elden Ring to get an online multiplayer counterpart. It’s a fascinating change of pace from the usual FromSoftware formula, making Elden Ring Nightreign an anticipated launch. It remains to be seen whether the multiplayer spin-off will hit the same heights as its predecessor or not, but it stands as one of the most intriguing releases of the year, so far.
Over the years, FromSoftware has gained a reputation as a developer that is highly skilled at crafting games that offer both harrowing challenges and fascinating worlds to explore. The arrival of Elden Ring in 2022 marked a major moment for the developer, as it’s considered one of FromSoft’s best works yet. Elden Ring saw an impressive amount of success, so the desire to follow up with more content focused around its world only makes sense. What’s even more intriguing, though, is that Elden Ring Nightreign sets up FromSoftware to be nominated in a specific Game Awards category for the very first time.

Elden Ring Nightreign Could Bring FromSoftware its First-Ever Best Multiplayer Nomination
Elden Ring may have its own multiplayer counterpart, but Nightreign being solely co-op is a different approach from FromSoftware. Nightreign recently held a playtest, which received a wide variety of feedback that has even caused FromSoftware to consider making some changes to the game’s original approach. The initial plan was for the game to either be played as a single-player or three-player experience, but two-player may be added, as well. This has yet to be confirmed, but if this change happens, it could give FromSoftware an even greater chance at such a nomination.

Single-Player Has Been FromSoftware’s Bread and Butter
While several of the developer’s games have co-op, most FromSoftware titles are primarily played as single-player experiences. That’s what makes the prospect of Nightreign so intriguing. This is quite new water for FromSoftware to be dipping its feet in. Even more compelling, though, is that Nightreign‘s approach to a multiplayer experience seems to have a lot of depth.
- Players band together to fight through three day-and-night cycles that culminate in a final boss, a Nightlord.
- The Night’s Tide is an environmental event that shrinks the map over time.
- Players choose between eight unique characters, Nightfarers, who boast their own sets of skills and abilities.
- Elden Ring Nightreign is launching on PC, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and Xbox One.
2025 Could Be Another Big Year for FromSoftware
Right now, there is no concrete way to know whether Nightreign will receive a nomination for Best Multiplayer or not, but with FromSofware’s track record, it’s quite possible. The performance of the game when it launches will ultimately determine its fate, but if nominated, it would be another huge milestone for the beloved developer. What lies in store for Nightreign is quite mysterious right now, but as the game’s launch draws closer, it will be exciting to see what the gaming community thinks about this take on the Elden Ring lore.
Elden Ring: Nightreign is set to be released on May 30, 2025.
For three years now, Elden Ring has continued to expand into a much larger franchise than probably intended. Between the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree, it’s already been a good time to be a FromSoftware fan. Nightreign‘s bold departure may prove to be too much, but it could also work tremendously well.
As the year continues, it will be fascinating to see how Nightreign fares against other multiplayer heavy-hitters. Nightreign may be a risky move, but it may also be one that pays off by the time Game Awards nominations are announced.
