There are many different weapons to choose from when starting your journey with Monster Hunter Wilds. There is a wide range to choose from, with the Lance being one of the most defensive options among them. Players that decide to make the Lance their go-to choice will want to know which Skills will best suit them.
Players that are having a hard time with the lance might want to consider a change before investing too much of their materials into its weapon tree. If being up close and personal is not to their liking, there are 3 ranged weapons to explore. If the slow movement speed is also an issue, the Bow can alleviate both of these concerns.

Monster Hunter Wilds: How to Perform A Draw Attack
Draw Attacks are special attacks that are required to activate a few Skills in Monster Hunter Wilds. Here is how it works.
Best Early Game Armor for the Lance in Monster Hunter Wilds
Players will start off Monster Hunter Wilds using gear from the Hope set but will rapidly gain access to new pieces of gear as they progress through the story. This gear will provide bounds for a player’s defenses. However, each piece will also have different skills tied to it. This means players sometimes might want to use gear with a lower defense for the skills they provide.
If players find a particular elemental attack troublesome, they may want to make use of the armor that provides the most resistance or prepare an appropriate meal for the hunt. Putting the right additional ingredients and finishing touches on a fish dish can see players having a massive spike to their survivability.
One of the earliest gear options will gain access to it from the Bone set. Players will want to dig away at any bone piles they may come accross, and aim to craft a Bone Helm and Bone Vambraces. These will have the same skills as their Hope Gear, but offer better defenses.

Skills will stack their combined levels. So having 1 piece of gear with Stun Resistance Lv 1 and another piece of gear with Stun Resistace Lv 2 would be a total of 3 levels.
While the Balahara Armor Set will provide a large boost to players’ defenses, they don’t offer much in terms of skills for the Lance. The Lance is about blocking and counterattacks, making Evade Extender a wasted opportunity. Players should still replace their remaining armor with either the Balahara or Doshaguma set pieces purely for their defense increases. The Balahara will raise it to 12, while the Doshaguma will raise it to 16:
- Balahara Mail or Doshaguma Mail
- Balahara Coil or Doshaguma Coil
- Balahara Greaves or Doshaguma Greaves
The Lance weapon for the Balahara set offers a great skill with Offensive Guard. However, this takes precision timing when guarding which some players might not have down yet.
Both may give players a drop in their fire resistance, but they will significantly raise their water resistance for a strong water hunt that will come later once they travel to the forest. This combination of defense and water resistance will help a lot for any missed guards.

This will give players the perfect early start for using Lances, and help them learn everything they need to make their way to Monster Hunter Wild’s Endgame content. It is worth noting that players should balance defense, resistance, and skills to find the sweet spot that works for them. Sometimes, having a massive spike in defense and resistance will help more than pieces of lower-level gear with excellent skills on them.
