Daredevil: Born Again’s debut episode shocked fans after killing one of the fan-favorite characters. However, the executive producer of the series assured fans that they would still see the character in the following episodes, probably through flashbacks.

Daredevil: Born Again debuted with a bang. It treated fans with a warm reunion of the trio — Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) — at Jose’s Bar to celebrate the formation of their new law firm. However, they were interrupted when Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) arrived, ambushed them and fatally shot Foggy. The scene left fans surprised and heartbroken since Foggy is an important figure to Matt. Despite Foggy’s fate in the first episode, executive producers Sana Amanat and Dario Scardapane said it would not be Foggy’s last appearance in the series.

The Daredevil: Born Again producer said Marvel bosses were supportive of their brutal and violent approach in the Daredevil reboot.

EP Sana Amanat addressed the heartbreaking ending in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 1 and gave a promising update about Foggy’s fate in the series. “He’s not gone forever,” Amanat told GamesRadar. Showrunner David Scardapane doubled down on Amanat’s statement, noting that Foggy could return to the show. He also admitted that they were “upset” with the scene. “He’s not. Listen, he’s not gone forever. That’s all I can say – it’s not the last thing you’re gonna see of him,” Scardapane added. “So, I understand. We also understand the heartbreak, and we did not take this lightly. I get upset. We were upset on the day, we were upset watching it. All of these things are true.”

Scardapane said Foggy’s death was already on the cards before he joined the project. However, in the original script, they kept his death off-screen. He felt that showing it would be significant because it was “intense and horrible and earth-shattering” which is something the audience should feel. Also, Foggy’s death has “ripple effects” because it will definitely affect Matt and Karen. Woll also spoke about the scene with Entertainment Weekly and said she understood the need to kill Henson’s character. “There has to be loss in stories,” she said. “That’s a deep part of how you tell things.” Woll added that for the actors’ part, killing a character left them with two losses — they would miss their favorite characters and wouldn’t be able to work with their co-star again.

While killing Foggy in the first episode was heartbreaking, it was necessary to see a massive transformation for Matt because Foggy is like a brother to him. The loss could lead to Matt losing his moral anchor as he navigates the thin line between justice and vengeance. He could be a lawyer by day and vigilante by night. However, without Foggy, Matt might not feel the need to continue his profession and fall further into the shadows as Daredevil.

Also, Foggy’s death will have a major effect on his relationship with Karen, who has been his emotional anchor. Sometimes, dealing with a loss is too much that it could bring people closer as they grieve together or apart due to the heaviness of dealing with the pain. There are tons of stories about spouses separating after losing a child; Karen and Matt could end up with the same fate after losing their dear friend, Foggy. Additionally, the reboot was supposed to continue without Karen and Foggy, so it’s difficult to tell how long fans will see them in the series. If Karen and Matt grow apart, Woll might have less screen time and fans will see less of Karen. As for Foggy’s next appearance, he might return through flashbacks as Matt and Karen grieve the loss. Meanwhile, Matt could seek revenge to avenge his friend’s death and do it in a bloody gory way. After all, Daredevil: Born Again is one of MCU’s most violent shows.

Daredevil: Born Again streams on Disney Plus.
