Monster Hunter Wilds Being More Approachable Is Exactly What I Need
But maybe not what the series needs.
There are a number of reasons for this success. Firstly, the series was already popular to begin with, but Monster Hunter World took it to new heights and onboarded a wave of newbies. The open beta tests for Wilds acted as great demos, further boosting pre-orders and day-one sales. However, it seems Monster Hunter Wilds may have confused some veterans by making things too streamlined
Is Monster Hunter Wilds Hand-Holding Or Too Complex?
Multiple menus, unexplained features, and multiple pitstops before a hunt are synonymous with the Monster Hunter series. While MH World made things much easier, understanding the complexities and mechanics of the game is still tough, and is best understood by shadowing a veteran player.
For instance, many players missed the fact that your handler, Alma handles a lot of the preparation for your hunt. In a PSA, Twitter user Ms5000Watts noted, “When you’re on a quest in Monster Hunter Wilds, Alma will stock your Seikret’s pouch with all the items you’ll need for it. Press left on the d pad to access it and grab those items. Nulberries, flashpods, heals, etc, is all right there!”
Scrolling through the comments you’ll notice that not many players paid attention to this, and some even reached the end-game without realising it. It seems the community is pretty divided on if the devs have resorted to “hand-holding”. Some think it gives you all the information you need, while others are accusing it of not revealing many mechanics.
Along with all the comments that said they had no idea about the Seikret pouch, one reply noted, “People stating that the game doesn’t tell them about this are blind, lying, or both. It literally tells you at the start of every hunt that supply items are in your Seikret’s pouch and what button to press. Alma even tells you to use them. It couldn’t hold your hand any tighter.”
Ms5000Watts summed up this scenario perfectly, saying, “there’s a reason why yellow paint will always be in games and it’s fine!”
