Who Is Doop And Why Could He Be Important In The MCU Going Forward?

Shockwaves were sent through the offices of Marvel Studios recently when leaked concept art revealed a load of potentially key information about 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday. The images showed how Robert Downey Jr’s Doctor Doom might look, a multiversal version of Doctor Strange working alongside him, a medieval setting including a village of Hulks, Star-Lord on a sofa with White Vision, and a group of Marvel Cinematic Universe heroes — Wong, Star-Lord, Kate Bishop, Cassie Lang, Tommy and Billy Maximoff, and Kamala Khan — around a table, accompanied by a mysterious little green blob-like character. The character in question was Doop.

Now, it’s fair to say that anybody who’s only familiar with the Marvel Cinematic Universe and not Marvel’s comic books will likely have no idea who Doop is or what his role might be in the MCU moving forward. However, the fact is, he’s a fascinating little character who could be an integral part of the live-action franchise going into Avengers: Doomsday and 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars if Marvel Studios utilizes him well. Fans should undoubtedly prepare themselves to fall in love with the little guy.

Who (Or What) The Heck Is Doop?

A strange little kidney-shaped floating green ball with a face and arms, Doop is much more than meets the eye.

Doop is an oddball character who’s reniform, green, and floats. He’s not too dissimilar aesthetically from Slimer of Ghostbusters fame — the most notable difference being that Doop has an encircled black “X” emblazoned on his peculiar torso. His origins are a total mystery (though it’s rumored the United States military created him during the Cold War and was key to victory over the Soviet Union), and he speaks a language different from any other (“Doopspeak”), which is presented on-panel in a unique Doop-specific font. He somehow became involved in the world of mutants and has worked alongside X-Statix and X-Force — not only as an active member of the teams but also as their cameraman.

Though it’s easy to underestimate Doop based on his strange and diminutive appearance, he’s a force to be reckoned with — something that even Thor discovered when the two fought to a standstill. He possesses superhuman strength and durability, a regenerative healing factor, extreme malleability, flight capabilities, the ability to replicate objects (including Thor’s mighty weapon Mjolnir during the aforementioned fight with the God of Thunder), and, perhaps most pertinently, an extradimensional void within his body that can be used to store characters and items. The void is known as “Doopspace,” essentially a multiversal doorway. Captain America has suggested Doop is capable of destroying planet Earth.

How Could Doop Be Used In The MCU?

Doop could be used as a wrecking ball character, an important plot device, an experimental filmmaking device, comic relief, or not at all.

One genuinely exciting potential use for Doop in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is as an experimental filmmaking device. The MCU has often transcended the superhero genre, producing space operas, political espionage thrillers, fantasy action flicks, and more. It even touched on the horror genre in 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, one thing it’s never attempted is to venture into found-footage territory.

That could change if the franchise explores Doop’s comic book role as a videographer. Doop could document the exploits of the Avengers, X-Men, or whichever superheroes he works alongside. Something like that would truly push the MCU’s boundaries beyond conventional superhero movie fare. It could provide an intriguing insight into events like Doctor Doom’s rise or the incursions that resulted in the formation of Battleworld in the MCU.

Alternatively, Doop could also end up being a surprise powerhouse of a character, providing much-needed backup during a fight scene in which his fellow heroes appear to be losing — think Thor’s sudden appearance in the Battle of Wakanda in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War when Thanos’ armies were overwhelming the combined efforts of the Avengers and Wakanda’s military. Doop is seriously tough and could easily take down legions of Doombots, for example, if Doctor Doom’s robotic soldiers are proving difficult for a group of heroes to fend off.

Doop could also provide some comic relief. His appearance undoubtedly lends itself perfectly to humor, and his dialect — much like the way Groot speaks in the MCU — will enable him to say offensive things that other characters can humorously react to and otherwise wouldn’t be allowed in the largely child-friendly franchise. The humor could be reminiscent of the irreverence of Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool, which has proven to work wonderfully on film. Let’s face it: regardless of how powerful Doop gets presented as being in the MCU, failure to use him for some funny moments would be a monumental waste.

However, the way to make Doop play a significant, helpful part in the MCU is to focus on the extradimensional void housed within his body. He’s a perfect narrative tool for the MCU’s multiverse arc. Doop could assist characters like Loki, Doctor Strange, Reed Richards, or any of the Avengers to navigate alternate universes. Perhaps most importantly, he could allow the X-Men and other mutants to enter the MCU seamlessly.

As someone strongly linked to mutants in the comics but not one himself, Doop is the ideal character to bring the X-Men and related individuals and teams to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It could appear that the Avengers and their allies are losing their battle against Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, only for Doop to bring in multiversal reinforcements in the form of mutants, setting the scene for them to also feature in Avengers: Secret Wars as part of Doom’s Battleworld.

Of course, not everything seen in concept art ends up in the final movie, so there’s also every chance Doop doesn’t even appear in any film in the future. However, that would be a massive shame. The possibilities are intriguing, as would be the potential for merchandise (kids would surely go wild for Doom toys and whatnot). Heck, that could even be humorously leaned into in-universe, as Doop is a celebrity in Marvel’s comics, with T-shirts, dolls, and all kinds of paraphernalia with his likeness on it.

The prospect of Doop appearing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is exciting. If his debut comes in Avengers: Doomsday, as the leaked concept art suggested, audiences won’t have long to wait to see him. The movie is scheduled to hit theaters on May 1, 2025.
