Monster Hunter Wilds has multiple monsters to hunt, where most are quite weak, but a few of them stand out due to their design and damage output. The monsters that stand out the most in every scenario are the apex predators of every region.

Learn how to beat Nu Udra in Monster Hunter Wilds!
Nu Udra, The Black Flame, is one such apex predator that you can find in the game, and it was showcased multiple times in trailers and all the promotional materials for the game. If you’re unsure where to locate it, here’s a guide that will help make that task easier.
What Is The Black Flame?
The Black Flame, also known as Nu Udra is the apex predator of Oilwell Basin in Monster Hunter Wilds. It is a cephalopod, which basically means the monster looks like a giant octopus. However, unlike your average octopus, The Black Flame is black in color and can breathe fire from its body.
While The Black Flame does sound quite menacing, it isn’t a very hard fight. As long as you bring a proper build, you can take it down very easily, both in the story as well as the end game.
It primarily resides in the lava below the forge in Oilwell Basin, and you will need Cool Drinks before fighting it. If you don’t use Cool Drinks, you will constantly take damage to your health and eventually end up carting.
Where To Find The Black Flame In The Story
The Black Flame features fairly quickly in the story, so you won’t have to wait too long to fight it.
Your objective will be to play through the story until you reach Oilwell Basin. Progress through the hunts in the area until you reach the quest Long Forgotten Flame, and The Black Flame will show up in a cinematic setting and will be introduced as the apex predator. Once that happens, you will be asked to search for The Black Flame.
Make your way to Area 7 on the map, and you will find something called Half-Digested Food on the ground. Interact with that, and the scout flies will direct you to the monster, which will be hiding in Area 15 on the map.
Where To Find The Black Flame In Endgame
Once you complete the story and enter High Rank, you might be looking to farm Nu Udra as quickly as possible. However, you will have to wait for a while before its quest shows up for you. Your first objective after reaching High Rank is to make it to Hunter Rank 40 and unlock the quest A World Turned Upside Down.
Upon reaching there, a quest will be initiated, where you will have to investigate a Gore Magala. However, with Gore Magala appearing, monsters in other regions have lost their sanity, and it is here where you will be sent to every region to hunt the apex monsters.
If you spend some time in Oilwell Basin, The Black Flame will occasionally show up on the map before you hit HR 40. You can hunt it, but you won’t be able to carve it.
Apart from that, you can’t join other players either, even if you can see them fighting the monster below HR 40. So you have to reach the designated Hunter Rank and complete the quest before fully unlocking it for the endgame.
One of the regions you will be sent to is Oilwell Basin, where you will be asked to hunt The Black Flame once again. Complete that quest, and the High Rank version of The Black Flame will be permanently available for you.
