Magic is one of the more immersive mechanics in Avowed, as it really helps you to dive into the fantasy aspects of the game. It’s fairly easy to perform magic — you don’t even need to unlock anything in the skill tree to perform basic abilities.

Understandably, the Unique magic items are far more likely to be better than anything else you can get your hands on, so consider keeping them equipped.

Superb Grimoire Of Elements
Quick Cast Basic Spells
Although this won’t appear to be the most stunning grimoire that you can get your hands on at first, it offers a diverse array of spells that you will find useful in just about any situation. The Superb Grimoire of Elements offers a fire, ice, and electricity spell.
Plus, on top of that, it offers you the chance to cast a magical shield that lasts for twenty seconds. Having this grimoire in superb quality also decreases your ability cost by 65 percent and nearly cuts the cooldown time of your spells in half.

Superb Grimoire Of Sparks
Surprisingly Not That Electrifying
Despite what the name would imply, the Superb Grimoire of Sparks only has one electricity spell — Jolting Touch. It does, however, have the harder-to-find spells, Grimoire Snap, Spirit Lance, and Missile Salvo, all three of which are cast at higher levels than Jolting Touch (Grimoire Snap is level five, and the other two are both level ten).
With the right skill upgrade, you can make Grimoire Snap do quite a bit of explosive damage. This not only knocks your enemies back but also stuns them for long enough that you can use your other spells to deal absurd amounts of damage.

Superb Grimoire Of Distant Death
May Death Rain Down
The Superb Grimoire of Distant Death has a good array of spells, able to deal just a little bit of elemental damage with two spells and encouraging you to keep your distance from the other two. Missile Salvo will allow you to attack multiple targets (or just attack one target multiple times).
The Blackbow spell allows you to prefer your attacks by using magical poisonous arrows. Keep your distance with this grimoire, and you’ll be exceedingly dangerous — just watch out for any enemies running your way. If you have any light armor equipped, you’ll want to be careful to keep this grimoire at hand and to utilize it liberally.

Superb Grimoire Of Entropy
Sap Away Their Life
This grimoire works best if you’re able to get the jump on your enemies — you can keep from a distance by slowly poisoning them with the Blackbow spell before diving in. By utilizing Pull of Eora, you can temporarily immobilize them by pulling them into the air, which allows you to freely smack them with the Parasitic Staff and hit them with Corrosive Siphon.
The Parasitic Staff with gradually restore Essence to you with every hit, and the Corrosive Siphon will gradually restore Health to you. If you find yourself wanting to save your money so you can spend it on something other than Health and Essence Potions, this is a great grimoire to have on hand.

Minoletta’s Conduit
A Stunningly Fine Wand
Minoletta’s Conduit may not seem like much in the face of many superb quality grimoires, but the best part of this wand does not lie in the middling amount of damage it does. Instead, the great part of Minoletta’s Conduit is the high amounts of Stun that it can inflict.
If you find yourself struggling to cast spells without getting hit, given that it takes a moment, consider equipping a wand like Minoletta’s Conduit to stun enemies just long enough to cast your spells and wreak havoc on the battlefield.

Superb Grimoire Of Defense
Works Great For Melle Fighters
Even if you’re not playing a primarily wizard-based build and staying ranged, you can still get a lot of use out of magic with this grimoire. Rather than relying on a bunch of cooked food to see you through to the next battle, consider just equipping the Superb Grimoire of Defense. With that, you can cast damaging spells that are centered on you, or you can cast magical shields on yourself.
When you get up in combat, it’s good to have a strong defense, and the Superb Grimoire of Defense just ensures that your defense and armor are all the stronger.

Whisper Of Exiles
A Frosty Punch
The Whisper of Exiles deals a decent amount of frost damage, with each hit dealing an additional ten percent Frost Damage. Given that the wand deals 60 damage at its base and has a very rapid fire rate, you can build up your frost damage really quickly.
Plus, with the high stun, you can easily take enemies off guard with your barrage of attacks. You will have to fight to get this wand, though, because it’s locked away in a chest at the center of the Great Sand Sea in Shatterscarp, guarded by several Dreamthralls.

Aurochs-Skin Grimoire
As Horrifying As The Name Implies
Despite the disgusting implications of this grimoire’s name, it really is worth using for the high-level spells, if nothing else. You have two level ten spells, Blast of Frost and Missile Salvo, one level 15 Freezing Pillar spell, and a level 20 Arcane Seal spell.

This leather-bound grimoire is incredibly dangerous, dealing large amounts of frost and area of effect damage, while also giving you the chance to constantly regenerate your Essence. This means you can keep dealing large amounts of damage, slowing down your enemies with Frost Accumulation and blasting them apart with a destructive volley of missiles.

Eilara’s Grimoire
Elemental Chaos
This Unique grimoire gives you the chance to get some great Elemental Bonuses by freezing enemies with a level 15 Freezing Pillar spell and destroying them with a level 20 Meteor Shower spell directly afterward. While you wait for both spells to cool down, you can explode nearby enemies with a level ten Spirit Lance.
You can also temporarily immobilize them with a level 15 Pull of Eora spell, allowing you to get free hits or easily gather enemies up for your frost and fire spells. Every single one of these spells works together to support you in dealing absurdly high amounts of damage.

Cruel Command
The Best Magical Weapon
The Cruel Command is the only magical weapon that you can pick up that starts out at Legendary quality. This wand deals 99 damage, over 100 stuns, and easily parries most attacks that come your way.
Its power attack easily stuns enemies at full health, meaning that if you whip this out at the beginning, you can get so many free strikes without much issue. It also deals a ten percent bonus Fire Damage, so if you pair this wand with a grimoire that can deal Frost Damage, you have essentially made yourself the most dangerous mage in the Living Lands.
