In Hello Kitty Island Adventure, you’ll catch a variety of critters and fish during your playthrough. Most critters/fish can be caught at any time regardless of weather, but some are more finicky. The Opal Flutterfin is one example. You can only catch it during a certain time of day, and you’re going to need two of them to complete an important quest. Despite its spawn conditions, it’s not a difficult fish to hook for players still early in their Island Adventure playthrough.

How to Get Opal Flutterfin
Every Opal Flutterfin Location
Opal Flutterfin spawn in Rainbow Reef during the evening. However, you won’t be able to catch them with the Bubble Wand. You’ll need to fish with the Fishing Rod from the crates above Comedy Hall. There are two areas over Comedy Hall that you can fish up Opal Flutterfins. Refer to the highlighted areas in the images above for the exact location.
Rather than wait for evening in-game, you can change the time by resting in a bed in any cabin. Rest until the option for “Evening” appears.

Where to Use Opal Flutterfin
Mermaidified Fashion Quest
You can release the Opal Flutterfin in the Fwishing Well in Spooky Swamp or Cloud Island. The more fish you release, the more likely you’ll receive a fwish-themed furniture piece. Pam requires you to have four pieces of fwish furniture.
You can also use an Opal Flutterfin in the aquariums you get from Small Gift Big Smiles. Some visitors require fish at their respective cabin before they arrive at Friendship Island.
Otherwise, you’ll want to hold onto two Opal Flutterfin of the same size for the “Mermaidified Fashion” quest. This quest unlocks the full potential of the Mermaidifier Machine, which you repair during the “Comic Relief” main quest. The “Mermaidifer Fashion” quest unlocks the ability to equip your mermaid outfit whenever you’re in the water.
You should have Badtz-Maru as your companion when you go fishing for Opal Flutterfins. If he has the Fish Whisperer ability, the chances of hooking rare fish are increased.
In order to complete this quest, you’ll need the following fish:
- Two Citrusfin
- Two Bog Clamfish
- Two Opal Flutterfin
- Two Banded Spelunker
As mentioned, make sure the Opal Flutterfin you give to Chococat for the quest are the same size. He won’t accept them if, for example, one is a Small Opal Flutterfin and the other is a regular Opal Flutterfin.
