Uzumaki Naruto spent a large portion of his adolescent life unaware of the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox or Kurama living inside him. Kurama was sealed inside Naruto when he was a baby by his father, Minato, the Fourth Hokage. Due to this, Naruto has a significantly large Chakra reserve. Kurama’s chakra gradually mixed with his own over time, leading to poor application of other jutsu. Due to this, Naruto’s chakra would represent Ying and Kurama’s Yang.

Thus, the two would work in harmony. However, at this time, Kurama’s chakra is still sealed within Naruto. As Kurama’s chakra contained the Yang affinity, each time Naruto accessed his chakra, it would result in a significant boost in power, enshrouding him in a demon fox cloak, during which Naruto would become severely more aggressive in his attacks.

Although Kurama had been kept sealed within Naruto, with the gradual trickling of his chakra into Naruto, the seal began to weaken over time. As Kurama had still been distrustful of others and sought to gain control over Naruto’s body, when Naruto experiences severe emotional turmoil, Kurama is then granted access to his body, thus peeling away at Naruto’s skin to create a deep red cloak with four tails, at times, Naruto would also grow an endoskeleton in this state if six-tailed have emerged, making him unable to distinguish between friend and foe.

Naruto Transforms into Kurama Mode

Gaining Kurama’s Respect Was The Path to Opening The Seal

Naruto and Kurama have been through many trials and errors, with Naruto initially attempting to gain control over Kurama and asking for assistance during trying times. However, Naruto learns the Nine-Tails’ name during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Although the two have been at each other’s throats before, Naruto had significantly worn down Kurama and respected the Fox for his contributions during his time of need. After that, Kurama begins to respect Naruto, fist-bumping in the process, after which Naruto completely unseals Kurama from his seal, freeing him from his cage and allowing Naruto to use his chakra after their hearts synchronize.

Naruto’s Tailed Beast Mode

After Naruto unsealed Kurama, he was able to access his Tailed Beast Mode; however, at the time of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto had limited access to the mode. During this time, Naruto was able to conquer and transform into a large version of Kurama. However, this Kurama Mode enables him to use his abilities without transforming.

During Naruto’s Tailed Beast Mode, he also has the ability to convert Kurama’s chakra and disperse it to those around him. With this, it will cloak the individual with the same “demon fox cloak” initially seen on Naruto, thus boosting their abilities. As Kurama and Naruto have synced, the initial aggression with this transformation is no longer present. By Naruto converting Kurama’s charka, this will no longer occur.

Naruto Combines Kurama Mode and Sage Mode

Naruto achieved Sage Mode while training under Jiraiya at Mount Myoboku. In this state, he must merge natural energy with his chakra, resulting in Senjutsu Chakra. This enables users to tap into the world’s natural forces, enhancing their speed, stamina, perception, and Ninjutsu abilities. Previously, Kurama had disliked Sage Mode as it would require him to “room-share with a toad.” However, now that the two have worked past their differences, during Kurama Mode, Naruto can absorb natural energy much faster while in this mode, further amplifying his abilities.

The evolution of Kurama Mode does not stop here. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto and Sasuke are revived and receive Hagoromo’s power, thus giving Naruto the Six Paths, which he combines with Sage Mode and Kurama Mode. Naruto’s abilities have already been significantly improved and boosted upon gaining Kurama Mode; however, the Six Path’s Sage Mode further increases Naruto’s physical skills. With this, Naruto also mastered his chakra, completely annihilating the previous version of himself, which he could hardly create a Clone Jutsu.

After the Fourth Shinobi World War, Naruto and Sasuke have their final duel. With Kurama now working hand-in-hand with Naruto, he is also able to gather natural energy. During the fight, Kurama is tasked with gathering and charging up the energy in their surroundings. He mentions he may have “charged up a bit too much” in Chapter 696, with this significant amount of natural energy, Naruto was able to use Asura Kurama Mode, which enabled him to create the technique Six Paths: Ultra-Big Ball Rasenshuriken, which was strong enough to counter Sasuke’s attack.

Naruto’s final mode with Kurama is the Baryon Mode, which took place in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. While this state is considerably more powerful than the previous states, it has more disadvantages and can be a risky technique if used for too long. During this mode, Naruto and Kurama’s chakra will consume raw materials, producing a new type of energy that pushes Naruto’s abilities to new extremes.
