Monster Hunter Wilds features a variety of tools and mechanics for players to experiment with, from weapon moves to wounding, mounting, and environmental interactions. Speaking of the latter, Hunting Assistants are a new addition that makes open-world investigations a bit more dynamic than usual.
Unlike the new Wounding mechanic in MH Wilds, help provided by Hunting Assistants are outside of the players’ control. However, that doesn’t make them any less useful. Here’s a short guide covering this new mechanic, including what they do, how to unlock them, and how to make the most out of the Hunting Assistants’ support.

What Are Hunting Assistants?
Hunting Assistants are other members of the Hunter’s Guild expedition who have decided to help you out during quests. They’re unlike the NPCs that act as teammates when you fire an SOS Flare in MH Wilds, however. Instead of fighting directly, Hunting Assistants provide support by laying traps that you can use during a hunt. As of writing, there are two Hunting Assistants in the game: Gemma and Werner.
How to Unlock Hunting Assistants in MH Wilds
First, you’ll need to beat the first three chapters of the main campaign. Then, speak to either Gemma in Windward Plains or Werner in Wyveria to get the Smithy’s Seal of Quality and Werner’s Test Run Optional quests respectively.
In Smithy’s Seal of Quality, Gemma will ask you to test out a new invention she’s been tinkering with. Here, you’ll be hunting a Lala Barina in the Scarlet Forest. Meanwhile, in Werner’s Test Run, you’ll be hunting a Guardian Doshaguma in Wyveria.
How to Use Hunting Assistants in Monster Hunter Wilds
Both quests from Gemma and Werner serve as introductions to the Hunting Assistant mechanic. During their respective hunts, you’ll get an optional objective telling you to lure the monster to Werner or Gemma’s location. Both NPCs will be marked on your map, and a pop-up will appear on your screen once they show up.
Hunting Assistants appear randomly on maps after you finish their respective quests. You can check the Environment Overview tab on your map to see if they’re present.
Once you regroup with either of the NPCs, wait for a couple of minutes while fighting the monster in their general vicinity. Once your Hunting Assistant’s trap is ready, you can lure the monster to traps to trigger them.
Each assistant provides a different trap. Gemma uses a device similar to Environmental Traps, which renders a monster completely immobile and harmless for a short duration. Meanwhile, Werner uses a bomb that can be detonated with attacks from both you and monsters.
