In most Monster Hunter games, the story is a means to an end. It sets the scene and gives you an overall theme, but it’s never been something you intently follow. Monster Hunter Wilds has decided to change that, giving a bona-fide story that is a genuine joy to follow. While that does mean there’s more hand-holding, you get an actually thoughtful story.
With all that extra story though, comes a considerably longer campaign than other entries in the series, and that means it might be a while until you reach the real meat of the game in High Rank. Well if you just can’t wait to get there, here’s the total number of main quests in the game so you can tell how close you are.
How Many Main Quests Are There In Low Rank?
Every Monster Hunter game is split between Low and High Rank, and that’s no different in Monster Hunter Wilds. Low Rank has the bulk of the story, just like every other game, though it is rather long this time around. The game is split into multiple chapters, and each chapter has multiple parts, which in turn has multiple missions.
Here are how many missions and parts there are per chapter in Low Rank:
Chapter 1 |
Chapter 2 |
Chapter 3 |
|
---|---|---|---|
Part 1 |
1 mission |
2 missions |
2 missions |
Part 2 |
3 missions |
2 missions |

Part 3 |

2 missions |
3 missions |
Part 4 |

2 missions |
Part 5 |

2 missions |
That means that the Low Rank story is comprised of three Chapters, with a total of 14 parts across them, and a total of 29 missions. It’s a hefty journey, one that will have you exploring almost all of the Forbidden Lands.
Bear in mind that main missions, known as Assignments, cannot be repeated. You won’t be able to go back on anything you’ve missed.
How Many Main Quests Are There In High Rank?
However, the story doesn’t end after you complete the Low Rank Story. After entering High Rank, you unlock a new series of missions which encompass Chapters 4-6, though these are gated behind your Hunter Rank now, and it must be raised to certain levels to unlock each new mission. Let’s check how many missions there are first:
Chapter 4 |
Chapter 5 |
Chapter 6 |
|
---|---|---|---|
Part 1 |
2 missions |
3 missions |
2 missions |
Part 2 |
3 missions |
3 missions |
N/A |
Part 3 |
3 missions |
1 mission |
N/A |
The High Rank side of the story is considerably shorter than the Low Rank one, coming in at three Chapters in length still, though with a maximum of only three Parts in a Chapter. In total, that gives us 17 missions in High Rank. A decent number still, but still quite a bit less than Low Rank.
Each Chapter is gated by your Hunter Rank though, and these are the approximate levels you must reach to unlock each one:
- Chapter 4 – Rank 15
- Chapter 5 – Rank 20
- Chapter 6 – Rank 40
The Parts within a Chapter also need an increased Hunter Rank as well, though you will have access to everything by the time you reach Hunter Rank 40.
Thankfully, the game is entirely open by time you reach High Rank, letting you explore the world, save investigations, and fight new monsters all at your own pace as you increase your Hunter Rank to get these final missions.
How Many Main Quests Are There In Total?
Every Monster Hunter has had a story, though none quite to the length of Monster Hunter Wilds. The shorter High Rank alone feels comparable in length to other entries, with the Low Rank having a much higher quantity of levels. But how many is it in total?
- Low Rank – Three Chapters, 14 Parts, and 29 Missions.
- High Rank – Three Chapters, seven Parts, and 17 Missions.
In total, that gives us six Chapters, 21 Parts, and 46 missions. A strong length, one that would take you approximately 20-25 hours. Short by many modern games, though dramatically longer than the length of previous Monster Hunter stories.
