There are many different ways to alter your build in Monster Hunter Wilds; helping you either find the perfect build or always aim to counter a specific monster you’re up against. The lack of a clear and linear upgrade tree allows for a lot of freedom and customization with your hunter; with additional options opening up as you progress the main story.
Decorations aren’t unlocked until later in chapter 2 of the game, after you find and defeat The Black Flame and offer additional ways to boost specific armor pieces or weapons. Decoration boosts may seem small at first, but added up they can make your hunter much more effective in combat; here’s how they work.

How To Equip Decorations In Monster Hunter Wilds
Decorations come in different levels, and depending on the level of the decoration, you can equip it with some armor or weapons. Decorations are clearly labeled as being for Armor or Weapons, and as long as your gear has a slot to place decorations in, you have a lot of flexibility with how you choose to equip them. First, you’ll want to make sure a piece of gear has a decoration slot.
- Open up your equipment menu or look at a piece of gear in the smithy.
- Along the right side of the screen will be the Equipment Info menu.
- On that first page, the second thing listed on armor will be slots, with it being the fifth thing listed for weapons.
The number of icons that appear along that option will indicate what level of decorations can be equipped and how many can be equipped, as those icons indicate a level 1 slot, a level 2 slot, and a level 3 slot. If that piece of gear has 3 slots, it can equip up to three decorations as long as the decoration’s level matches or is under the level of the slot.
You can equip decorations either at Gemma or in your tent by selecting the Change Equipment option. If a piece of gear has a slot available, it will appear on the right side of the gear piece’s name. From there, select the “Edit Decorations” button found at the bottom of the screen to open up a list of all available decorations and choose which one you want to equip on that piece of gear.

To increase Hunter Rank, Monster Hunter Players need to partake in a variety of in-game activities, like Hunts, Quests, and collecting materials.
How To Get More Decorations In Monster Hunter Wilds
The first and most straightforward way of getting decorations is by completing main story missions, hunts, or optional tasks. After getting the rewards from completing the quest and storing them or selling them, the next menu will be the Appraisal Box which will reward you with any decorations you got from the quest. Completing quests in High-Rank will start rewarding you with much better decorations than those earned in Low-Rank.
Very late into the base game during chapter 3-3, you’ll get access to the Melding Pot, and one of the options will be to meld decorations. The Melding Pot allows you to get rid of old decorations you don’t use anymore or that aren’t right for your build and turn them into hopefully better ones. The Melding Pot does involve a good bit of chance to get what you want, so it’s best to stock up on decorations by completing hunts to have a lot of materials to mess with when using the Melding Pot.
