Far Cry Extraction Shooter Has Reportedly Been Rebooted

Summary

  • Ubisoft has reportedly rebooted a Far Cry extraction shooter codenamed Maverick.
  • Allegedly, the game would’ve been set in a fictional version of Alaska, where you would have to survive against AI soldiers, wild animals, and enemy players.
  • It was originally scheduled to launch later this year in April, but has now been returned to the prototype phase.

Ubisoft has reportedly rebooted a Far Cry extraction-based multiplayer shooter codenamed “Maverick”.

Insider Gaming reports that the project began as a multiplayer component for Far Cry 7 before Ubisoft Montreal decided that it would better serve as a standalone spin-off. It’s unclear why Maverick has now been rebooted, but several sources allegedly familiar with the game’s development claim that the “writing was on the wall” for months. Reportedly, the project’s dedicated tech team, Talisker, was moved from Maverick to work on Blackbird, ie Far Cry 7, in December, which Insider Gaming describes as the “final nail in the coffin”.

Ubisoft Montreal — who is in charge of both projects — will reportedly return Maverick to the prototype phase with help from Ubisoft Sherbrooke and Berlin. Insider Gaming claims that, amidst the reboot, a dozen developers have been moved to work on Blackbird, while another dozen have been sent elsewhere, leaving around 50 developers without an assigned project.

In 2023, Insider Gaming first reported that Ubisoft had begun work on an extraction-based shooter akin to Escape from Tarkov or Hunt: Showdown 1896. Allegedly, the game would’ve been set in a fictional version of Alaska called Alaschnica, with players scavenging for resources, levelling up, and acquiring perks, all while fighting back wild animals, AI soldiers, and other players.

Ubisoft reportedly planned to launch Maverick before Far Cry 7 in April of this year, but with the entire game now rebooted, it’s unclear what it will look like if it does come out, and when that might be.
