Doctor Who Season Two Is Teasing Lots Of Time Travel
When the premiere date for the next season of Doctor Who was confirmed, Disney and the BBC also revealed a synopsis for the show that has given fans an outlook as to what can be expected this time around. It said:
“The Doctor meets Belinda Chandra and begins an epic quest to get her back to Earth. But a mysterious force is stopping their return, and the time-traveling TARDIS team must face great dangers, bigger enemies, and wider terrors than ever before.”
The series is obviously going to be heavily focused on the Time Lord’s connection with his new companion, Belinda, and the idea of them being trapped and struggling to get back to Earth sounds like an exciting concept for the entire season. Of course, there will be aspects of the show that do take place on Earth based on other characters within the show, but when it comes to the Time Lord, his time is set to be spent traveling around different planets to try and get Belinda back home.
Audiences Are Ready To See Doctor Who In Different Planets
Doctor Who has always had an element of adventure, with time travel being at the core of everything that happens on the show due to the Time Lord’s abilities and the power of the TARDIS. That has often been why Doctor Who has excited people, as it allows audiences to travel out of this world to planets where different species can be found. It puts the show on a much grander scale than any of the episodes that are shot on Earth, and that’s what helps to build its reputation.
The last season of Doctor Who suffered from not exploring life away from Earth more often. There were only two episodes, ‘Space Babies’ and ‘Boom,’ that were primarily set on different planets, and that was a mistake. People want to see the Doctor in unfamiliar territory where the science-fiction elements of the show are able to be in full force. This also enhances the bond the Doctor has with his companion because the travel often brings a level of thrill and fear out of them, which forces that connection to become even stronger. The fact that Doctor Who’s next season appears set to focus on locations other than Earth should allow this new partnership between the Doctor and Belinda to start with a bang and be jam-packed with drama.
There have been reports recently that Doctor Who could end up being canceled after the second season, with Ncuti Gatwa potentially having even filmed a regeneration scene to finish his time on the show. While the BBC has denied this, it has been clear that any potential season three will hinge on good viewership. That’s typically the case with any show, but there is going to be an added level of pressure on this season to deliver something special. Following on from Gatwa’s original season as a Time Lord and expanding things to the next level in terms of scale, drama, and tension is the logical next step, and that is what’s set to happen here.
Having episodes and scenes taking place on Earth is still going to be important for the show. It helps Doctor Who feel familiar to audiences as they are able to understand the location and connect with the characters around them, which then enhances the show in a totally different way. However, heading away from Earth brings a level of adventure that scenes in London, England, are not able to achieve. If the show’s future is potentially on the line, enhancing the level of drama and excitement is going to be crucial in captivating and retaining viewers. It will allow them to be hooked on the series because each episode can be set somewhere totally unique with characters that the writing team can come up with in an imaginative way. It’s a promising early sign for Doctor Who in what could end up being one of the most important seasons in the show’s impressive history.
