Chainsaw Man: The Reze Arc Movie Could Redefine The Franchise

The upcoming Chainsaw Man film based on the Reze arc might be a defining moment for the franchise.

Who is Lady Reze in Chainsaw Man?

Reze, also known as Lady Reze or Ms. Reze, is a devil-human (hybrid) from the Soviet Union who was originally sent to Japan to hunt the Chainsaw Man — despite taking place in the late 1990s, the USSR still exists in the series. Her mission is actually to steal his heart.

As a human, Reze is a beautiful woman with purple hair and green eyes, who seems to be nice and also to be romantically interested in Denji. Like any other hybrid, she is able to transform into her devil form — she is the Bomb Devil, she is the Bomb Devil, which is why this arc is also called the Bomb Girl Arc. She is actually the result of an experiment by the USSR government to create super-soldiers, and the Bomb Devil was placed inside her as part of that training program. Her devil form resembles an atomic bomb, specifically, the Fat Man bomb that was detonated by the US over the city of Nagasaki during World War II (1939–1945).

What Happens in the Bomb Girl Arc?

She is trying to manipulate him and gain his trust in order to get closer to him and complete her mission. She made her debut in chapter 40 of the manga and in the last episode of the first season of the anime, and she works in a café. A good portion of the arc shows Denji interacting with her as they get to know each other, but things change when she reveals herself to be the Bomb Devil as the Devil Hunters pursue her. However, Denji is romantically divided between Reze and Makima.

Denji ends up fighting her as the Chainsaw Man, and is frustrated to learn that it was all a ploy. Despite everything, Reze is not dead by the end of this arc — she will be back in the Control Devil Arc (Chapters 80-97) as one of Makima’s pawns. She is implied to be alive at the end of the series.

During the Bomb Girl arc, Beam mentions she is working for the Gun Devil, but that is believed to be an excuse that Makima told him, and only her affiliation with the Soviet Union (which holds 28% of the Gun Devil) is confirmed. The following arc is the International Assassins one.

Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc Release Date

Chainsaw Man: Reze is set to debut in 2025. An exact release date is expected to be unveiled at AnimeJapan 2025, which takes place on March 22–25 — a Chainsaw Man panel is scheduled for March 23.

It seems likely that the movie will be released in the second half of the year, to give the production enough time to prepare proper advertising campaigns. While no international release has been confirmed, many expect Crunchyroll and Sony to distribute the movie around the world.

There are a few changes in the main staff. Studio MAPPA is still handling the series, and Hiroshi Seko remains as the head writer, but the movie will be directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara, who directed Black Clover and has also worked on a few Chainsaw Man episodes. Season 1 was directed by Ryu Nakayama and Makoto Nakazono.

Chainsaw Man is available to stream on Crunchyroll, subbed and dubbed in many languages.
