While Avowed doesn’t have the variety of spells that the Pillars of Eternity games have, you still have plenty of spells to choose from and build your ultimate arsenal of pain. Sure, play style is subjective, but the power of the spells below sure isn’t! Below are the best spells you can find in Avowed.

Ring Of Fire
You Become A Mobile Cyclone Of Pain And Protection
Just as anywhere else, fire is a powerful force that can handle the myriad of creatures that are hunting you down all over the living lands in Avowed, but, rarely, such a destructive force can also serve to protect the user without harming themselves in the process. Ring of Fire, once cast, follows you wherever you go for the entire 20 seconds it’s on the field.
Also, once cast, it reduces incoming damage by 15 percent, and at rank two, it causes AOE damage to any enemies in melee range, only getting stronger as more enemies attack. There isn’t a downside to this spell per se; it’s just that lower-ranked spells easily outclass them once they’re ranked up, making Ring of Fire obsolete quickly.

Parasitic Staff
Your Emergency Essence Recovery Plan
Amid a battle against several enemies, you’re bound to run out of essence at some point, leaving a fledgling wizard like you vulnerable. At least until you unlock this spell. Once you do, that fear and trepidation you feel once you run out of essence manifests into physical form and turns into a weapon in your hands to swing to your heart’s content.
The best spells work twofold, and Parasitic Staff is no different. While you’re beating the heads of Dreamscourge-ravaged bears and mushrooms, you’ll gain back essence with each blow for as long as the staff remains on the field. The only downside is how up-close and personal you get while using the staff.

Pull of Eora
Control The Field, Control The Battle
When you first unlock Pull of Eora it can seem underwhelming at first. After all, the spell can only pick up two enemies at first, so it’d be understandable to want to spend your skill points elsewhere. But wait, just stick with it, and you’ll soon see the potential of what the Pull of Eora can do.
Once you max out its rank to three, you can hold up to four enemies in the air, which doesn’t sound much better, but when some of those are shield-wielding heavy hitters, or even worse, healers that will heal a boss at a moment’s notice, then you’ll see why it’s worth investing it. You’ll have to have a little patience though, as you can’t max it out until you hit level 20.

Arcane Veil
Uninterrupted Spellcasting Time
Nothing is worse than trying to pop off a quick missile salvo and some Xaurip strikes you, stopping you from finishing. Next thing you know, you and all of your party members are incapacitated, and you’re starting over. Okay, this may be an exaggeration, but Arcane Veil can help reduce the chances by preventing your spells from being interrupted for the entire duration it’s active.
Take advantage of it being a low-level spell and rank it up early. Once you max it out, you’ll be able to reflect not only any projectiles aimed at you, but any attackers who decide they’re brave enough for close quarters will also be knocked back the second they swing their weapon. If nothing else, it’s fun to watch.

Returning Storm
Stun Them With The Power Of The Storm
The spell is flashy but straightforward: you can summon a large lightning storm to strike your enemies on the field. It covers quite a large area and will cause damage to you as well, so you’ll have to plan accordingly if you don’t want to get yourself hurt in the process.
Returning Storm can stun enemies right out the gate, but the higher in rank you level it, the stronger it gets. Rank two not only stuns the enemies but roots them in place for several seconds. Rank three, on the other hand, increases the number of lightning strikes during the duration of the spell, giving the illusion of increased speed. Just be sure not to stand in the water when casting the spell.

Grimoire Snap
Sometimes, It’s About How Cool It Makes You Look
For a skill that seems more like a joke than anything, Grimoire Snap is pretty impressive. The Grimoire Snap clears a small circle of enemies from around you, giving you some breathing room while giving you the bonus of making you look like you’ve finally found the point you were looking for in your book to rub it in someone’s face.
When fully maxed out, Grimoire Snap performs a stronger stun on regular enemies, and can not affect bosses as well, while at a 30 percent essence cost reduction. While it doesn’t have a high threshold for you to unlock it, you’ll have to get your hands on a grimoire that comes with the spell, which can be a pain if you don’t know where you can find one ahead of time.

Missile Salvo
These Missiles Aren’t Minor
If you chose Minor Missile at the beginning of the game, you’ll know how underwhelming it was using it. The spell was three small orbs that worked more like a shotgun blast than anything else. It was adequate, but it’s understandable if you look at Missile Salvo with a side eye thinking it might be similar.
However, this spell is in another league altogether from Minor Missile. It forms a large magic sphere in the air and targets several enemies with homing missiles until the sphere leaves. Rank two gives it the bonus of crushing any enemy still standing once the attack is finished like a wrecking ball.

Freezing Pillar
Tell Everyone To Just Chill
As an active combat wizard, you’re going to have to be quick on your feet while thinking of which spell to fit the situation while not getting killed in the process. That’s a lot! Sometimes, it calls for a quick Parasitic Staff on the fly, while others call for a giant ice boulder to be dropped from the sky. Hey, why not?
Initially, when you unlock Freezing Pillar, it gets destroyed on impact, but as you rank it up, it becomes more durable and causes continuous freezing damage to enemies unlucky enough to be that close. The pain doesn’t stop there for them though, because once time is up or the pillar takes damage, it explodes, causing even more carnage on its way out.

Corrosive Siphon
You Can’t Beat A Spell That Saves Your Life
For all the food that you carry, and all the potions that you have on standby in your hot bar, there are going to be times when the fingers or buttons aren’t going to be fast enough to get your health back up to a survivable level. Why not get a spell that not only damages enemies but greatly heals you in the process?
It’s a no-brainer. You can get it as early as level one. It can be used to stun enemies once you rank it up to level two. Max out the rank, and you can get a temporary health boost when your health bar is already full. Don’t let the fact that it’s an early-level spell put you off, it should be in your build no matter which way you make it.
