While I’ll always have an affinity for RE5, Resident Evil Outbreak and its sequel File 2 are the best co-op games in the survival horror series. Tense multiplayer action in that old-school style, with a touch of randomization to keep repeat runs fresh and danger lurking around every corner, makes the PS2 pair beloved cult classics to this day. We may not get an official remake any time soon, but new Steam game Blood Typers is here to fill the gap – and it combines the format with another iconic PC zombie game favorite, Typing of the Dead.
Blood Typers traps you inside a run-down movie campus that’s become infested with zombies. Playable solo or in co-op, you must fight and run your way through its tight corridors and cramped environments, which feel lovingly reminiscent of classic Resident Evil, as you attempt to survive through the night. Unlike the Capcom zombie games, however, Outer Brain Studios has implemented a Typing of the Dead control scheme, where everything from movement to combat, reloading, and inventory management is handled by typing on-screen commands as fast as possible.

Levels feature procedural generation, with each presenting you a complex network of rooms to explore. Locked doors will require you to seek out keys in true Outbreak fashion, and limited inventory space means every pickup is a consideration. Are those shotgun shells your key to safety, or will a health-restoring snack prove a more reliable long-term bandaid? If you’re playing Blood Typers as a co-op game, there’s the option to use proximity-based voice chat to add that extra level of tension to proceedings.
You can adjust the typing difficulty to match your current skill with a keyboard, and there are challenges to put your words-per-minute pace to the test. Once you’ve mastered the initial studio map, you can look forward to multiple other movie themes, which Outer Brain says are “each vaster than the last.” Get far enough and perhaps you’ll even find out who’s responsible for this whole fiasco.
So far, the response from players has been fantastic – of the user reviews submitted in its first few days, an impressive 94% give Blood Typers the thumbs up. “This is literally Typing of the Dead gameplay with the structure of Resident Evil Outbreak, and I’m here for it,” writes one. Another adds, “I’m a typing game enthusiast and for the longest time I thought that no typing game could compare to Typing of the Dead until I gave Blood Typers a try.” One person even says, “Bought this game without knowing you have to type but it’s so good.”
Blood Typers is out now on Steam, priced at $9.99 / £8.50. There’s also a free demo available to download and try first. You can take a look here if you think you’ve got the keyboard skills to make it out alive.
