Keanu Reeves was asked about the future of the hit John Wick franchise. However, the Hollywood superstar thinks there’s a slim chance fans will get another film.
Reeves made his debut as John Wick, also known as Baba Yaga or The Boogeyman, in the 2014 film, John Wick. He was introduced as a retired hitman seeking revenge against Russian gangsters after they killed his dog—the last present he received from his late wife—and stole his car. The film was well-received and scored multiple sequels. Reeves reprised the beloved role in three more movies — John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017), John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). John seemingly died in the last film after suffering a fatal shot. However, since his death was only implied, some enthusiasts still hope he is alive.

The Sonic The Hedgehog 3 actor was recently asked if he would be making another John Wick movie. Reeves’ response wasn’t promising as he reminded fans of the character’s fate in the last film. “Well, you know the character’s dead,” Reeves said, per Extra. John has several near-death encounters, including being hit by cars and shot off buildings, but he manages to survive. However, Reeves hints that there’s no plan to make another film in the near future. “He died in John Wick: Chapter 4. I know [it’s] Hollywood … but right now there isn’t,” Reeves added.
In John Wick: Chapter 4, Wick is challenged to a duel to the death by the High Table’s representative, the Marquis Vincent de Gramont. The duel takes place in Paris, and John faces Caine, a blind assassin forced into the duel. In the last stage, John and Caine shoot each other at close range, but the former does not actually fire his gun as he saves his bullet to kill the Marquis and secure his freedom. However, after the duel, John collapses on the steps of the Sacré-Cœur because Caine has shot him fatally. The film ends with beloved supporting characters Winston and the Bowery King at a cemetery, visiting John’s grave next to his wife’s, implying that the assassin is dead.
John Wick is a well-loved franchise and the neo-noir action thriller series is critically and commercially successful, so it’s understandable why fans want more of it. The desire to have another John Wick movie stems from its ambiguous ending. While the movie implied the protagonist was dead, his dead body wasn’t shown. The scene at the cemetery certainly didn’t convince fans that John was dead. Instead, many felt it was staged to make him disappear from the assassin world.
Additionally, John Wick is too iconic to stay dead. He is not just any other action hero because of his intense combat style and legendary reputation. He is one of the best action figures on the big screen. Plus, there are potential storylines that can still be covered in John Wick 5, including John faking his death and leading a High Table rebellion. Or maybe he’ll meet a new threat that will force him back into action. John Wick is an inspiring character whose overarching narrative highlights revenge, redemption, determination, and grit, which anyone can easily relate to.
